Hawaiian word: a'a
It has a lot of definitions, but the commonest one refers to
a type of lava flow that hurts when you walk on it barefoot.
Will u reveal what moved u to identify yourself with that ?

David, I learned the word on my first trip to Hawaii, upon going to areas of solidified lava flow, where it was used simply as a technical term for one type of solidified lava. The part about hurting when walked upon was an expression I picked up later, when a poster on Abuzz worded it that way. // Originally I used the handle "a'a" in Abuzz but changed it to "Aa" in the mistaken impression that so doing would remove the high-applause number from my handle.

Mostly, I like the unusual qualities of the word itself. In addition, it has pleasant associations with a long-ago vacation in Hawaii.

I can certainly understand adopting a word
with pleasant memories, but will u explain the reason of using
of the painful association of walking barefooted over a ruff surface?
That is uncomfortable even over non-volcanic earth
with natural stones strewn around.

I 'd imagine that u 'd wanna emphasize the good memories
and downplay the discomfort ?

No discomfort, David - I never walked barefoot over rough lava.
That usage is only one of many, and I found it quite amusing in a wry sort of way. Pleasant memories have a life of their own and need no emphasis.

This has no doubt been said before, but I think of our last decade as the "oughts", as in ought to have done differently.

As to the teens, even when I was one, I never liked that word much. Oddly cute in sound. Will work on another one for my own use. The tens? The pre 20's (nah). Span years? eh. More than ten finger years..

um... undici, dodici, tredici, quattordici - and on to diciassete, etc.

I may think of them as the dicis. Or, dicies. Dice could work.

When I was one, we were teenagers.

I enjoy your posts, Osso, erudite and nice,
but I 'd like them even better
if u did not use the same size font and obsessive-compulsive use
of black ink (cyber-ink ?) all the time.

Don 't u find it confining, like speaking in an endless monotone
with neither the occasional whisper,
nor the exultant shout in luxuriant color to reveal
the full panoply of your emotions on a significant topic ?
