David Levine, rest in peace

Ah, David Levine. I haven't followed his drawing in a bunch of years since I rarely read the New York Review of Books, but back when I was first toying with learning to draw in the early seventies, I used to painstakingly copy a few of his illustrations in order to train my eye and hand to ink drawing. It took me hours, of course, to make those lame versions of his work.

Here's the NYTimes article about him -

his self portrait -

slide show of him and some of his drawings -

I didn't know about his paintings...

@ossobuco,
I found his painting #9 to be intriguing.

@ossobuco,
I remember a retro exhibit of some of his watercolors at the Philly ARt Musuem many years ago. His wc were really good and expressive just like his chgaracatures. He did a number iof wc's of the amusement piers and tourist areas of the Jersey Shore and he expresssed the shallowness and loneliness of the area in such a fashion that the tourist bureau guys were really upaset.

@farmerman,
Good article on him by Michael Kimmelman in the NY Times this a.m. (I don't have the link right off hand right this minute, but it should be on their home page.)
