In the movie '2012" the plot is simple and as old as old as can. The characters are cardboard, and both the science and the final engineering problem had me grinding my teeth.

Still I suggest strongly going see this movie for the special effects in this movie is the best of any movie I had ever seen in my life.

Overall, it is awesome for that reason alone and if you can find it showing on one of those giant screens I would suggest going there instead of a normal movie theater.

@BillRM,
The very premise of the movie is bogus but, like INDEPENDENCE DAY, it could be fun if we dispense all knowledge. Its a pretty arcane subject that only interests a few people , However, some schlub wants to market an Apocalypse, any number of people will believe them. Look at all the "teabaggers" who believe that their Medicare will be subverted.

I enjoyed UP as a really well done animated movie. It has a plot and special effects that even transcend animation skills of the Pixar folks. It was quite enjoyable and I didnt need a pile of larvae around me to watch it.

@farmerman,
Farmerman when you see it please take note of the engineering problem at the end that could be solve by jumping a sensor or two, if someone was dumb enough to design the limitation into the control systems in the first place.

@BillRM,
I'll probably go see it just for the effects. I need some brain-dead purely visual entertainment.

Ok. I saw it. It was awful. Amazingly awful.

It's only redeeming characteristic is that lots of stuff gets destroyed by flashy special effects. Watching the Yellowstone Caldera explode and seeing large parts of California break apart and fall into the sea was pretty good.

Unfortunately, if a movie is going to live on flashy special effects then I think it has to go overboard and give you almost nothing else, then at least it can play for some comedy. But through a lot of this film I actually found myself waiting for something to get destroyed just so they would stop talking.

@rosborne979,
Did I not say it was a special effects movie alone?

And I had ofter wonder why the movies companies can pay 100 of millions to produce a special effect movie and not even a few thousand dollars to get a good plot as well.
