Communication between BumbleBeeBoogie and son Stuart re the gutter cleaning tool:

Stu, What do you think of this gutter cleaning tool?
-------------------------

Hi Mom,

I checked out the tool, and the only thing that I can see wrong from a design point of view, is the arm holding the cleaning tool, (not the mirror) should be located in the center of the tool, not the end. Because it is located in the end of the tool, it is going to compete with the side of the gutter. If it was in the center of the scraper surface, you would have a better chance of not hitting the edge of the gutter. You would have more strength with less effort by being located in the center and distributing the motion of the gutter cleaner better.

Hope this helps. Are you thinking of buying one for your house?

Stu, thanks for your suggestions. I wondered about the imbalance design too, but thought the tool was a great idea. It would encourage people to clean their gutters more often, reducing the water damage clogged gutters do. I also thought it great for people who shouldn't be climbing ladders since it will reach 2nd storey gutters.

I was interested in how it would help homeowner associations who are responsible for maintaining gutters. Its expensive to hire professional gutter cleaners one or twice during the leaf drop season and clogged gutters and downspouts cause a lot of damage to homes, which eventually cost the association's homeowners lots of money.

I'm wondering if the townhouse associations at Harbor Bay would think it a good idea to buy some of the tools, or have a local contractor redesign the tool as you suggested and manufacture a few for the associations use. I suspect it could save the associations a lot of money. I recall that they spent thousands of dollars each year to pay for professional cleaning. Homeowners themselves could safely clean their gutters and significantly reduce the size of their association's maintenance budgets. What do you think?

I dunno, BBB. It seems if there were heavy leaves in the gutter two stories up, it would be hard to manipulate that tool from the ground to scrape them out. Just thinking there is a huge loss of strength when something is extended so far.

People around here speak highly of something called a "Gutter Shield" which allows water to go through but blocks leaves. I'm sure it is lots more expensive though.

(I'm surprised you have gutter blocking problems in NM!)

Piffka, I don't have gutter problems in Albuquerque. I was exploring the tool as a possibility for the Master Homeowners Association I worked for before retiring.

Oh... I see. Well, it is certainly the right time of year to be concerned.
