@ossobuco,
I don't think you could bear to part with one.

Yep, if you keep them more than a few days it's painful to give them up.

@ehBeth,
I'm ready.
I am not sure that I am responsible. My life now is not as wiry as before. Chances are that I am really not a responsible choice.
Thus the dilemma.

@maporsche,
You should check this photo out. I think we have dogs that look alike. You like labs , I do too. Your dogs are so pretty. My lab is male, 6 yo.

@ossobuco,
I'll add that I am still recalcitrant re adoption because of possible flat out failure for paying for serious pet conditions, and wherever others draw the line on those, I can't enter into any of it financially.
It's a bummer, but I can deal.

Still, is some life better than none? I genuinely do not know. I'll pick life.

My business partner (former, so had) has had many many pets. She rescued one she saw thrown from a truck, and paid for his hip surgery... probably not easily.

But, also to quote her, "it's a cat" - she was raised on a ranch.

She had a limit.

But who but me a fool would have rescued Pacco, at least six years old at the time?

What would I like? more money from any who have it to support shelters and good care, and even, praise be, no kill places..

@ossobuco,
Honey, don't adopt a dog out of guilt. You need to make sure you take care of yourself first. Maybe volunteer at the local shelter?

I agree with Swimpy, your local shelter would be very happy to have you
volunteer and help them take care of the animals.

@CalamityJane,
I wouldn't be too sure. I tried to volunteer at my local shelter and they turned me away, saying that they have enough volunteers, but if I'd like to donate money they'd be more than grateful.

I did donate some dog-food, but I was pissed about them not accepting my time, even if it was just to play with the dogs.

@maporsche,
wow maporsche, I would be pissed too. They never can have too many volunteers, as one-on-one time with the animals is so crucial and they simply
don't have enough people to pamper all the animals.

maporsche, if I were you I would call the head of the shelter to see if indeed
this is their policy.

@Swimpy,
Swimpy, I wouldn't adopt a dog out of guilt - I'd adopt one out of love of having a dog.
But I'm voting no on it in my present financial condition.

@spendius,
I do include research establishments, in some cases.

Aren't abattoirs usually commercial businesses?

What isn't a commercial business? "In some cases"--good grief!!

Trying to slip by the question like that osso doesn't impress me.

Understandable, osso. But I wish you were in a better financial position to adopt! Sad

@spendius,
You want to start a thread on lab research, Spendi, go ahead and do it.

I used to work in a partially NIH funded lab and I don't rate all laboratories as equal.

Abattoirs - I know less about. I figure they are commercial. Why would I donate to them?
