I am totally computer illiterate, it seems.

@djjd62,
When I open the gravitar site (i.e. click on the gravitar link in my profile) I don't get a whole lot of options. Just a space to log in. There doesn't seem to be any distinction between logging in and registering. What am I doing wrong?

@Merry Andrew,
Andy, you need to register new there with a different name & password.
Once you've done that, they'll send you a link to your email and after clicking
on the link you're in!

My understanding is that I must log in with the e-mail addy that's associated with my A2k account. I recently advised A2k of a change in e-mail address and that was accepted and worked out by the hamsters. (You might have noticed that about that time the little devils changed my avatar from the cool red one to this crappy brown. That was part of the e-mail address change apparently.) So I try to log in with the address that I use on A2k and the password thatI've been using for years. No soap.

Dear gawd, wot am I doing wrong?

Just tried to access gravitar again. That's the most incomprehensible site I've ever tried to maneuver. To coin a phrase, it sucks. It won't let me register because, first, it didn't like my password, then it didn't like my choice of user name and I don't know what-all else they don't like. I tried to send them an e-mail and even that failed.

What the hell is this idiotic gravatarthing anyway and why can't our own hamsters handle it?

@Merry Andrew,
Un un. Any email address will do. It will email a confirmation to you, to which you must respond to.

@roger,
I take it back. It does seem you need the email you use on a2k. I'm at a loss.

@Merry Andrew,
Have you previously registered with the email address you used to register for the new A2k?

If so, it won't accept any username and password for that email address other than the one you registered for.

@Merry Andrew,
Merry, with the advice the other friends gave you, you should be able to finish having an avatar.

But, if everything fails, you could try this method:

1- Save the picture I posted (right click, save as: e.g. merry.jpg)

2- Go to gmail.com, yahoo.com or similar.

3- Open an e-mail account, in order to have a new address.

4- Go to avatar.com

5- Register with your new e-mail address.

6- Upload your picture there (you then have the choice: from your computer, from the internet, etc).

7- Select from your computer, then browse to the picture you saved firstly.

8- Check out if it's working, by logging off, then logging in again, you should see your avatar.

9- Open "my account" on A2K.

10- Change your e-mail address (just follow the instructions).

11- Clear your cache.

If you don't know how, type "clear your browser cache" on google.

Within a few minutes or a few hours, you should see your avatar displayed on A2K..

@Francis,
Oh, I have the picture saved, Francis. Thank you. But I still can't get into gravitar. On my most recent foray it told me that the user name 'merryandrew' (I had to retype it that way because I was told no caps) is already taken. By whom? Not by meem as far as I know.

@Merry Andrew,
That rings a bell - there was already an ossobuco, and I said, who else would ask for such a dumb username?

Can't remember what I did about it though.

Why are you surprised the name is already taken, MA?

Merry Andrew is a noun, a movie, a song etc..

It produces 77.000 hits on google.

It's no wonder if someone else took it already as a nom de plume, a nickname..

I suppose you would have a better chance if you try MerryAndre!

A further thought. . . . On the off chance that you have accidently completed the registration process, look for a link thing asking if you've forgotten your password. If you click it, you will get an email addressed to you, using your gravatal username. It will have a link letting your put in THAT username, and setting a new password.

Of course, the email will go to whatever account it thinks you are using.
