We switched from Identicons to Wavatars as the default randomly generated avatars.

If you want a specific avatar just upload it at gravatar.com

I've noticed a few others that seem to have changed from the original issue. I thought I read somewhere that people who didn't have their own avatars had ones created by some random program.
