letty :

i'm sure you must be mistaken . it's probably a former greek temple left behind by some invading greeks a few thousand years ago Laughing

the closest we come to it is former prime minister mackenzie king's
KINGSMERE ESTATE . he had parts of ruins collected by canadian diplomats all over the world - including some stones from the british parliament during WW II - and sent to him . they were all incorporated into some rather strange but interesting structures .

http://www.foundlocally.com/Ottawa/Images/Hull-KingEstate-KingsmereRuinsTall.jpg

king was prime minister from 1921 to 1930 and again from 1935 to 1948 !

Quote:
King firmly believed in the power of Crystal Balls and rarely made a serious decision without first consulting his 'psychic'. It was only after his diaries were examined following his death that King's interest in the occult was discovered.

(he was neither the first nor last leader to dabble in the occult i believe)

he also liked to "consult" with his departed mother before making important decisions .
despite all that he seems to have done rather a good job as canadian prime minister

hbg, that was what was left of a former brothel of Pompeii. Love ancient mysteries, buddy. The lava covered Herculean and poisoned residents of Pompeii. This is the mountain that is the culprit.

Interesting aside about the occult, however.

we cruised off vesuvius about 20 years ago - just some smoke arising .
somebody should have notified the volcano gods that there were tourists to be entertained !

mt kilauea did much better job for us in december 2004 .
we were cruising back to san diego after leaving kona at 5 pm .
the captain brought the ship along the mt. kilayea volcano at night - what a sight it was !

looking at the ship's log :
wednesday , dec 15 , 2004
10:41 pm - scenic cruising mt. kilauea
11:34 pm - steering north-east course for san diego

since i didn't think a night picture with a simple camera would show anything , have a look at a youtube clip :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaspsEkaFDc

it was as spectacular in sight and sound as the video shows - we felt a bit of a shiver running down our spine !

It's a shame to allow this thread to die, hbg.

Dutchy, his picture was something from The Fifth Element (movie starring Bruce Willis)

Clary, don't quite understand your connection, but I will follow through.
