A 72-year-old Harlem business owner used a
shotgun to blast four men who tried to rob his
restaurant-supply business Thursday afternoon,
killing two and sending two others to the
hospital with gunshot wounds,
the New York City police said.

The business, the Kaplan Brothers Blue Flame
Corporation, at 523 West 125th Street, near
Amsterdam Avenue, sells commercial gas and
electric ranges, as well as parts and repairs.

The police said that the four would-be robbers
entered the business and announced that they were
robbing it. One of them took out a 9-mm pistol
and started to pistol-whip a 33-year old employee
inside the store. The owner then took out a
shotgun and opened fire, striking the four men.

Public records identify the owner as Charles J. Augusto Jr., 72.

It was not immediately clear whether the owner
had a license for the shotgun.

Calls about the shooting began coming in at 3:09
p.m. One man died at the scene and a second, who
was taken to at St. Luke’s Hospital at 3:22 p.m., later died of his injuries.

A third man injured in the shooting walked into
St. Luke’s " which is about 12 blocks to the
south of the business, in the Morningside Heights
section of Manhattan " with gunshot injuries.
The fourth man was found nearby with gunshot wounds,
the police said.

As the police cordoned off the scene, a large
crowd of onlookers gathered around the site of
the shooting. Near the business are two churches,
Antioch Baptist Church and the Manhattan
Pentecostal Church; the 26th Precinct station
house; and the Our Children’s Foundation,
an afterschool program.

Nearly two hours after the shooting, the body of
a dead man lay on the sidewalk, its upper half
covered in white plastic. The man wore gray pants
and white shoes. The sneakers pointed up.

@OmSigDAVID,
another version of the piece has
Quote:
It was not immediately clear whether the owner
had a license for the shotgun.

as

Quote:
The police said they did not believe the shotgun " a Winchester 12-gauge pump shotgun with a pistol grip handle " had been registered, as city law requires. The police also recovered the pistol used by the would-be robber.

in which case the shooter was illegally packing. Not a nice job.

It was a very, very nice job.

All citizens of NY are now safer, thanx be unto the shooter.

The registration law is unconstitutional and unAmerican.

how do you figure? Even if you go with the reading that every American has the right to carry a gun, that no one can tell him/her no because of the "right to bear arms" clause, why is a law that mandates disclosure illegal? if you have to give notice that you are with gun your right to be with the gun has not been impacted. It means that you don't have the right to hide the fact that you have a gun. I see no words in the constitution that cause me to think that you can not be compelled to disclose your armaments. kindly show me the words.

The damned government has no jurisdiction to interfere.

Your argument is like saying that if people go to church
( or don 't ) that government has the authority to QUESTION them
about their choice and hold them to account, keeping records of their explanations,
as long as it does not RESTRAIN them from so doing,
or if people go to vote, (or decide to stay home) that its OK
if thay have to explain their decisions to something as low as a government,
as long as it does not actually coerce them.

Every good American citizen shoud regard his employee, government,
with an appropriate degree of contempt and loathing.
That shoud be integrated into the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our relationship with government, the henchman of the collective,
is one of ADVERSITY. We need to make sure that WE stay on top.

I am pretty sure that we will not.
Remaining on top woud take a miracle
and people like Hawkeye r on the side of the enemy.

Resistance is futile.

You must be joking. That business sees plenty of cash... especially in New York City.

I have to agree with crazy Dave's opinion on this one. Said owner may very well have saved an innocent life.

Uh-oh. Have I made a mistake here? I may need to re-think this.
