Any of you guys know why bandwidth is so ridiculously expensive (for what you get) there in Australia?

Those transfer caps are crazy (I could easily bust some of them in a day), and ever since I've been on the internet I've heard Australians complaining about the limited bandwidth. What gives?

@Robert Gentel,
Butggererd if I know.

Found a few explanations on google.

This is the only one that looked remotely sensible....but I have no idea if it is or not.

@dlowan,
I think those must be contributing factors (especially the distance from the US) but more than just price the caps are what I find weird. Power users down there must be suffering.

It's only going to get worse because as IPTV and IP telephones take off those caps are going to feel very inadequate. Those kinds of capped plans are starting to be tested in places like the US to deal with the huge surge in bandwidth use that is coming over the next 5 years. I hope they lay down some wider pipes in Oz instead. It's going to hold back technological innovation with video and voice over the internet there.

There's some bigger than Ben Hur Broadband overhaul the government has been talking about.

Supposedly massive speeds etc to be built for...but the cost still seems to be huge.

Test post:

Just ignore this everyone. I'm posting here to see if I receive an A2K notification email, having just changed my email contact details.
I've missed my email updates ... missing for a whole day! Wink Very Happy

@msolga,
You don't get email updates when you are logged in, and you can't post when you are logged in. So it shouldn't work (but this post might send you one).

Interestingly, I now have a new avatar! Surprised So something's happened (I guess) as a result of my notification of new email address. I wonder how to go about getting my old one (Felix the cat) back? Confused

@msolga,
Your gravatar avatar is tied to the email address you log into A2k with.

You will need to tie your Felix to the new email address.

@msolga,
Erm...I can't see you...at least not yet.

I may need to clear my cache....can you see yourself (your avatar, I mean?)

Edit: I am on a browser with no A2k cache...either your avatar hasn't migrated yet, or it's not yet properly attached to the email addy you use to access A2k.
