Television was part of my life earlier than it was for many people my age: my parents bought their first set in 1949.
Maybe my memory of television as a child is the memory of someone too young to know which way is up, but, I remember my mother briefly watching Dave Garraway, who seemed quiet and intelligent. My thoughts then were that is the way I would like to behave when I grow up.
That said, morning television now is a disaster. Why does CBS think if they put dozens of "anchors" on in the morning, their Early Show will be interesting? It isn't. It's just a means of shilling their afternoon shows.
Katie Couric on whatever network she's on seems more like a news presenter but that program can be as silly and shallow as The Early Show.
As for whatever that nonsense with Ali and Jack is called, it is the most vomitable show on television that isn't a soap opera. Ugh. Ali makes Kelly Ripa look like a Nobel laureate. She's the sort of person I would like to move next door to just so I can put up a spite fence.
I'd like to comment on this but the last time I watched morning weekday television was 9/11. Seriously. In the past the days I've noticed how bad morning TV was was on holidays. Now I'll watch Food Network or ESPN or HGTV and ignore the networks.
It might be better if Couric did the news topless.
I watch Good Morning America just about every week day morning. It is pretty good. Sometimes it can be silly but not too silly.
I'm usually at the library, using the computer, when GMA is on.
I don't understand why television has become so loud. All the cheering that audiences do is a turn off.
The Today Show is on in the morning on our TV but I'm usually online, fixing breakfast, getting ready for work and just catch bits and pieces. Whoppi this morning plugging her show tonight with a guest appearance of GWB (not really, it's the fabulous fake from Leno's show) was funny. The President shows up at her hotel and has to use the John.
The Iranian American character says, "Well, I've heard of White House leaks, but this is ridiculous!"
(Sounds like a Bruce Vilanch line for sure).
Trying to meet a quilting deadline, I turned on the television for time keeping and for company. GMA was the pits this morning. These quilting projects that have to be done on time are certainly illuminating the world of day time television. Anything that can turn the talented Wayne Brady into a vapid . . . gee! I don't have a word for what he is as host.
Anyway, most people seem to use morning tv as a time keeper ("When they break for the local weather, I know I have to collect my things and get out the door.") and as a way of being minimally informed, I guess it would be dangerous if it were interesting: too many people would be late for work.
