but a cynical thought kicked in. Was the dog rescued earlier, but then 'rescued' again, this time for the cameras!

It never occurred to me that the rescue of the dog might have been "re-staged".

I think what might have made it seem that way was the fact that the woman didn't react with a lot of emotion when the dog was spotted. But she was a remarkably composed woman--she was standing in the rubble of her home and fairly calmly giving an interview. So, when she saw her dog, her somewhat restrained reaction was consistent with her general demeanor, but I thought she seemed quite happy and relieved to see him.

I also can't imagine that anyone would want to rebury their dog under debris just so a news crew could get a rescue story--that would be an awful thing to do to the dog.

I would have been a lot more emotional about finding my dog, and probably about the fact my home had just been destroyed, but this woman was much better contained than I might be. I thought her reaction was genuine and that it was simply a coincidence that the news crew spotted the dog when they were doing the interview.

But I can understand why you might have had a cynical thought about whether the rescue was re-staged.

I heard they are using the social media, like Facebook, to post photos of pets that have been rescued, or found wandering, so their owners can locate them.

@firefly,
Cynical as I am, I don't think that was staged. That is one strong woman with her head screwed on right. "Can you comprehend what happened here?" "I know exactly what happened here." Probably not the answer they were expecting.

When I wrote the above, I'd seen the interview, but it ended just a little earlier than the one you posted! I've watched your version, and I now realise that the whole thing was totally genuine! In the last few (silent) moments, it became apparent that the dog was obviously traumatised, poor darling, and the woman - although pretty controlled for someone who'd been through such an ordeal - was shaking with emotion.

So it was something of a miracle after all!

@firefly,
Sorry for my cynicism but how about if that surviving lady was offered $5k or $10k by the network or news organization for the restaging?

@Ragman,
I thought that at first, but I now see that I was badly mistaken. If she was acting, and I find it hard to believe that after watching the video clip again, then she ought to be earning a vast amount of money as an actress. It was an Oscar winning performance!

The poor woman was in a state of controlled hysteria I think - the tears will doubtless come in floods once the media attention is off her, and she is somewhere safe with her little dog.

Two of my favorite breeds: the German short haired pointer and ... the ... what kind of spaniel is that?

But German short haired pointers are the perfect sized dogs, especially the ones that think they're lap dogs. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

About The American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards

The American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards™ were created in 2010 to celebrate the remarkable bond between dogs and people. This annual national competition searches out and recognizes America’s Hero Dogs, who unconditionally avail themselves to us in so many important ways, whether it’s saving lives on the battlefield, lending sight or hearing to a human companion, providing therapeutic support to children suffering from cancer, or just greeting us with a wagging tail at the end of a hard day.
