@jcboy,
I didn't have my own dog until I was your age or a little older. Fell hard, I did.
He was found by my gallery partner's boyfriend on the railroad tracks behind our place, as a puppy. I bonded. But he was a born runaway, and our old eagle's lodge back yard went the length of the block, many other businesses along the way, with small openings in the fence.
That's part of how I got to know Venice, getting in my car and combing the streets for him the few times he ran away. The first time, I cried for three days straight. My gallery partner got us another dog right away, but I was still crying. Then the next week Sandpaw came back to our front door. Later took a couple of other trips. I remember getting a call from a gala party, gay if I remember, a first for me.. and from the local fire station (it was a mothers' day, and they offered me treats when I came to get him.) Oh, and the people that ran a skateboard place kitty corner from the famed Carousel on the Pier. We managed to keep him in there, after those episodes, but in our transitional place where we later rented a house, each of our boyfriends and her son around, Sandpaw got into the front yard and jumped the fence. Such a venice boy. Never saw him again.
He was gorgeous in his venice shepherd way, and I hope he was taken by someone who cared for him. Of course he had tags. I called a few times to see if he had been picked up as a runover dog. No.
In the follow weeks I put up flyers (useless, given we were two blocks from the beach that went for miles) and I bothered every possible dog pound in the LA area several times for weeks.
Skipping along to Pacco (italian for package) - he was found sauntering down highway 101, nabbed by someone who took him to the humane society, where I found him a month later. We were quickly attached and went through stuff together, thick and thin, but lots of good stuff. I was a mess when I put him down.
Now, as is obvious, I still enjoy talking about him - that was almost five years ago. The sorrow went away - the reminiscence is dear.
