Rocky is the first male dog I have had in many years. He is supposed to be two, as of April. He stands flatfooted when he pees. Does it seem likely dogs learn earlier to lift a leg high from other male dogs?

You would think that was the case but maybe he literally didn't have an older male dog to model himself after.

@edgarblythe,
No, the leg-lifting isn't learned.

My current dog is the first male dog I've ever owned, and when I did research about the best time to have him neutered, I learned that the leg-cocking, and territorial marking, automatically, and innately, appear as the dog sexually matures. So, if you want to eliminate those behaviors in a male dog, you have to have him neutered before he begins displaying them, and before full sexual maturity.

So, your dog was likely neutered before he reached full sexual maturity--which is the course most owners follow--so the leg-cocking just never developed.

I was concerned about territorial marking, particularly in the house, so I had my dog neutered when he was almost 7 months old, and before he began displaying leg-cocking.

When my dog urinates, he simply extends his back legs away from his body slightly, keeping them both on the ground behind his body, and his urine stream goes straight down, directly on the ground beneath him. In other words, he continues to urine in the same position he did as a puppy.

That makes sense. Once in a while, he does lift a leg, about four inches. He showed a few signs of wanting to hump my leg during his first month with me, but only once or twice. He had just been neutered.

This all makes me think back re Pacco.
My love...
oh, nevermind.

The memories..

Not least crossing the main two streets to work, where highway 101 bifurcated into two rushing roads.

Dog and me always made it.

I did drive, this part of the why.

@edgarblythe,
Oh, the neutering doesn't eliminate or prevent humping. My dog humped before he was neutered, from about the age of 4 months, and he's continued to hump and hump and hump.

In fact, at the moment, I'm really having a problem because he's been humping rather compulsively, particularly his dog beds, which I've had to temporarily take away for that reason, and any pillows he can pull under him. Lately, he's been humping almost every chance he gets. Not that I'm trying to deprive the little guy of sexual pleasure, but he's had some problems with his penis fully retracting back into his sheath after he's gotten himself aroused, and that can present serious problems for the dog. I had my Vet on the phone one night at midnight because I wasn't sure whether I needed to take him to an emergency clinic since a portion of his penis still extended out of the sheath two hours after a vigorous hump of his bed. My Vet said that as long as he seemed otherwise all right, and not in discomfort, I could try putting a little cooking oil on the penis, to see if that helped it to retract into the sheath, and bring him in in the morning. Fortunately, the problem resolved on its own almost as soon as I hung up with the Vet. But it has recurred since. Never having had a male dog before, I wasn't familiar with dealing with that sort of problem either. Live and learn...

One of my female dogs, who was spayed rather late in her life, was trying to hump again before the stitches were even removed from the spaying surgery.

So, my experience has been that spaying/neutering really doesn't affect the sexual pleasure and satisfaction the dog gets from humping/masturbating.
