@hingehead,
Lovely dog. On the throw up and eat thing, of all my dogs I've never seen that. Is it common?

Yes. Working at the dog kennel for almost 8 years? I've seen far too much anecdotal evidence to make an assumption it's pretty common.

@ossobuco,
Did you notice anything in common with those dogs? except normality? I suppose like with everything else, there have been studies.

@ossobuco,
One of mine does it too often, maybe once every three months. I think she eats too fast then goes into belly spasm. Chucks up her dinner and starts gain slower. Very distressing.

@ossobuco,
Being a more recent observer of doggy behavior, I've noticed some dogs get anxious as part of group when eating. They sometime will meat too fast and suffer a bit of upset afterwards. The habit of eating vomit afterwards is a common dog behavior. To dogs, they don't see the behavior as gross like us picky humans do.

This assumes there isn't already some sort of digestive problem as a result of eating non-doggy food (like human food from table) or some plant irritant from outside. My aged sister was feeding her poodle Cheetos and odd table scraps and her dog was getting irritated digestive tract. Stopping the behavior eliminated the problem.

Also, in the case of my own dog's digestive problems, I changed her diet from no-cereal dog food. I switched her to higher quality ingredients (Blue Buffalo) and problems went away.

Oops, that should've read, "I changed her diet to a high quality non-cereal, non-additive dog food."

Also, when I would switch do0g foods or diets, I gradually changed my dogs from one dog food to another...substituting 25% or so at a time til it was on the better non-allergenic food after about 3-5 days. It produced lesser gastric problems in the transition. The same practice was effective for my cats diet transition, too.
