The mystery word is POPULAR. I don't quite understand how the number 4 can be almost anything you wish it to be (it's both e and n in the 3rd example and u in the final answer) but that's how it works out with the other clues.

3 is also P
4 is whatever you want it to be
5 is L
6 is A
7 is R
