@mcee fya,
Infancy was tough.
An infant shouldn’t have to bear the brunt
Of all the pent frustration
Of a family of four.
Pregnancy planners confirm
I was a birthday present
For my mother, long withdrawn
From any idea of a marital bed.
A nasty surprise.
I did not understand.

Through my teenage years
I walked in fog.
Never once seeing
Or feeling, affection.
Never understanding.

Cornering into adulthood
I found my father figure,
Like many a woman before me,
A distant alcoholic to put me at my ease.
And he, poor sod, didn’t understand
Either.

Down through the years
I rolled and bumped.
Efficient, smart, withdrawn.
Running, terrified, from tenderness when I found it.
I had no means of understanding.

Here in middle age I now accept
That tenderness is not to be my fate.
Can thank my stars
That I have sidestepped hate
With years of study, introspection,
More patience than nature or nurture
Could explain.

Grieving for that tiny babe,
Regretting all those years it took to learn.
I think I understand.

@edgarblythe,
Maybe far away
Or maybe real nearby
He maybe pouring her coffe
She maybe straightening his tie

Maybe in a house
All hidden by a hill
She sitting playing piano
He sitting paying the bill

Betcha they're young
Betcha they're smart
Bet they collect things
Like ashtrays and art

Betcha they're good
Why shouldn't they be?
Their one mistake
Was given up me?

So maybe now it's time
And maybe when I wake
They'll be there calling me baby
Maybe.

Betcha he reads
Betcha she sews
Maybe she's made me
A closet of clothes

Maybe they're strict
As straight as a line
Don't really care
As long as they're mine

So maybe now this prayer's
The last one of it's kind
Won't you please come get you baby
Maybe

There once was a land called A2k
people there frolicked and ate parfait
when asked if they gained
they said no one complained
I'd rather not step on scale and weigh

@Ragman,
She walked to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday
She hides her bruises with her linens and lace

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind her mask
Bearing the burden of her secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

(chorus)
Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear but they turn out the light
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it will be too late

(chorus)

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
Her name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

(chorus)

@spikepipsqueak,
There's a hero if you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid of what you are.
There's an answer if you reach into your soul
and the sorrow that you know will melt away

(chorus)
And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on
and you cast your fears aside
and you know you can survive.

So, when you feel like hope is gone
look inside you and be strong
and you'll finally see the truth
that a hero lies in you.

It's a long road when you face the world alone,
No one reaches out a hand for you to hold.
You can find love if you search within yourself
and the emptiness you felt will disappear.

(chorus)

oh, ohhh,Lord knows dreams are hard to follow,
But don't let anyone tear them away.
Hold on, there will be tomorrow,
In time you'll find the way

And then a hero comes along
with the strength to carry on
and you cast your fears aside
and you know you can survive.

So, when you feel like hope is gone
look inside you and be strong
and you'll finally see the truth
that a hero lies in you
that a hero lies in ... you
mmmm that a hero lies in.....you.

petals fall from the lilys in the vase
I watch them in slow motion
and they beat on the table like my heart
I saw them bloom
I see their doom
sometimes I see my own
today has just been one of those days
where everything seems to go wrong
but I can't bring myself to sweat it
think of what others are dealing with
and my day, I just forget it

Sometimes they say things you don't want to hear
Sometimes they look at you and their thoughts are clear
Even when you cant stand them
You still need them near
The're family

Theres no way you'd take **** like theirs from anyone else
When you dissapoint them, it hurts like hell
you share your tears
and you'd share your wealth
All that you wish them is happiness and health
thats family

Some people make the circle
you know they will never let you down
they dont have to be blood
to love them down to the ground
If they share the ups
and are there for the downs
there family

To my friend, my best friend
whom I care for so much
To my sister who stands up for me
To my mum, she's my crutch
my brother who'd rather give than be given
and my grandad who only wants best for his women
To my son, I love you so much I could burst
I give you my best and try to spare you my worst
I love you with all my heart and soul
Hold my hand, i'll hold yours, we can conquer it all

When I was down in the gutter and people turned their backs
You picked me back up and healed all my cracks
Not a day goes by that I dont thank god for you all
You make me feel big when were really so small
Thats family

If you don't have a mother or father, sister or brother
dont shut down your heart
theres room for another
all you need is a friend
on whom you can depend
So open your mind and hands to lend
Life is too short
dissapears like a vapour
time takes us all
so we'd better not waste it
Love is so sweet I can taste it
Be family

Boredom
vanquished by
doodles, poetry
lines & ink.

Frustration
relieved by
fists, kicks
yelling & screaming.

Pain
subverted by
drugs, sleep
laughing & tears.

@dirrtydozen22,
No offense but when you quote the lyrics of a song or post someone's poem you should note it's origin.
Some people may otherwise be confused and think that 'Maybe'
(a song from 'Annie') is your original work.

I wrote a poem,
As all poets must.
Mine's of ashes on roses,
Eyelids gone to dust -

A private poem,
About a friend's heart -
The charming poses -
He lived life as art.

I end my poem,
With a fond farewell.
Another life closes -
One more final knell.

If you want to be enlightened
You shine the light on what you want to see better
Yourself
And if you can look with honest eyes
One thing is guaranteed
You're not going to like what you will see
But it will be too late
Now you are going to become enlightened

Thank you, very much. I can't seem to write much verse these days. That makes it even more special if somebody enjoys any of it.
