I'm embarrassed to be a Canadian today. It's more than time to do away with the Queen's representatives in our country. The money that we're saving on salaries, and their not too small expenses, can be given to bale out the sealing industry and get folks doing other kinds of work.

Quote:
OTTAWA (AFP) " Canada's governor general gutted a seal slaughtered for her during an official Arctic trip, cut out its heart and ate it to show solidarity with Inuit seal hunters, local media said Tuesday.

@Reyn,
She hadda be coached into doing that. Is she being subsidized by Canada but is a citizen of the UK? (Governor General? I thought you guys kicked their asses out already)

If you need any help as to how to kick the remaining brits out of these patronage jobs , we can work out something. Course were gonna need a coupla French sailors.

@farmerman,
She's a Canadian in an antiquated job. You couldn't pay me to do that, no matter what job I had.

@farmerman,
This will probably explain it all a lot better than I could.

Either way, I don't feel that the Queen's representative has any business taking a political position, which is what I feel this action is.

Oh yeah, oops! My bad.

Will I need to write out "bail" 100 times, Miss Beth?

@Reyn,
No big deal. Bale is a common mistake.

She's got moxie. I happen to agree with her, though I'll acknowledge it's a contentious issue.

I was far, far away from feeling shame.

The thing is, the governor general is supposed to stay away from potential politically motivated issues. More like a neutral figurehead.

I heard a news report on this sealing industry yesterday, and it's currently worth only $3 million dollars (down from previous years). It seems to me, the federal government could easily sort this out by retraining these individuals (who only make a few hundred dollars individually out of this), much like was done with some fishermen.

@Reyn,
Maybe we shouldn’t have a GG, but we do. I haven’t had particularly strong feelings about that one way or the other, though her budget seems enormous for a position that’s generally held to be largely symbolic. And she’s supposed to be non-partisan, I see that. That didn’t stop her from proroguing parliament. I didn’t want her to; though I probably would have done the same given the same set of circumstances, it pains me to admit.

She’s no stranger to controversy I guess is my point.

In this latest instance, I appreciate her point of view and respect her willingness to participate in the preparation and sharing of the bounty. Her support, while perhaps futile, lends a degree of validation, and dignity, to some Canadians that participate in a way of life that is perfectly legitimate IMO.

I admire what little I know of her.
