I have the boss' blessing to get one for my birthday next month.
Doing a little research - so far it looks like I'm leaning toward the XBox.
Any opinions on which is the better machine?
funny i just got rid of my xbox 360, just didn't use it enough, never had any problems with it, has a good variety of downloadable content (arcade games, demos)
the ps3 is more powerful, and does have the advantage of a blue ray dvd player, i'll probably look at that if ever do get another console

I once saw a meme saying that if you have real life friends get a Wii, if you have online friends get an XBox and if you are a hard core gamer get a PS3. I'd agree with that assessment.
I'd lean toward XBox because it can do a lot of nifty things (like serve as a Media Center Extender) but I think it really depends on the games, and what you like to play and I am not that up to date on game releases.
true, some games are proprietary, as of now GTA IV is strictly xbox
