How Do You Store A Car?

Reply Thu 2 Apr, 2009 05:21 pm
Family member leaving for 6 months and must leave his car here. I'd like to see it stored, but how? Should he rent a garage? Should it be up off the tires? Fluids drained or kept full? Covered? No one else drives the car and he can't leave it in the driveway.

@sullyfish6,
Where do you live? If it's very cold the fluids could freeze in the pipes. Would you be willing to store in your backyard ? You could always put a car cover on it. Also, starting it up and reving on the gas would probably be a good idea, cars get crappy after the sit for long periods of time with no attention. Storing it for six months could end up being a lot of money. By no means am I giving you professional advice, just my personal suggestions. =)

@sullyfish6,
agreed as to where are you (Ohio?)

and how valuable a car?

6 months is not so long of storms are not an issue. I would start it once a month and move it just a bit if I could, but not critical.

@BarbieQPickle,
You know, that's why I seldom get into the English language questions. There is always someone who knows just so much more than I.

@roger,
Yet your answer is written in perfect english! =) I'm just trying to have an idea or suggestion no matter where I missed a comma or a period, hopefully it still makes sense. I thought that was the point of this website. Someone can write me a bunch of jumbled up crap as long as it answers my question or helps me, I'm good to go. hah

@sullyfish6,
I left my car in San Diego well over 6 months just under a tree. Got pretty grimy and initially the battery died because it wasn't regularly started up and charged but that's all that happened to it.

And ex-girlfriend of mine parked her dying car on the street for a year thinking it would be towed away. It wasn't. After a year we went by and the car started right up, though it still had the same problems it originally had. A couple hundred bucks in the shop and it was good to go.

@sullyfish6,
It depends on the car and where it will be sitting, but if it is not something special, I would disconnect the battery (so it wont drain), make sure the gas is completely full so it wont go bad, and make sure it has decent antifreeze (which it almost definitely does). For only 6 months, it does not need to go off its tires, but it should be checked up on. Keep the tires inflated, and if possible, start it up and move it once every month or two. If it were more long term, you would put it on jacks and change out all the fluids. If it is outside, a decent car cover that straps on should do the trick. One other thing to watch out for whenever a car sits is mice and other animals making a home in it. For this reason, it doesn't hurt to just open up the hood every one in a while and looks for evidence of this

To save a little money, the car owner should contact their insurance company and have the liability and collision coverages suspended for a while. In many states you can still maintain comprehensive coverage on it while it's in storage.
