@dagmaraka,
As a member of "Aretha Franklin's Hat Fan Club" on Facebook, I just got this:

Quote:
Subject: Aretha's Hat Will Go to Smithsonian.

Great News!!!

It's a hat that's been worn and enjoyed my millions, at least virtually - and now it will go to the Smithsonian. Confirming on the Steve Harvey Radio Show this morning, Aretha Franklin has agreed to part with the beloved large bowed hat that she wore on inauguration day.

First it will go on loan to the Smithsonian along with Michelle Obama's inaugural clothes where it will be on display. Later, it will go to Barack Obama's presidential library, where it will remain.

Franklin was apparently surprised by the global interest in her hat - yes who could have predicted so much fun could be had with such an item.

@hamburger,
Good morning, Mr. H! That's rather bizarre looking! You sure it's a hat, and not a porcupine? Laughing

@Reyn,
reyn :
it's a GAMSBOCK HAT (a "gams" is a mountaingoat in the alps and the "beard" is made from the backhair of the the male goat = BOCK ) .

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f1/Rupicapra_rupicapra_0.jpg/750px-Rupicapra_rupicapra_0.jpg

seems that the B.C. mountaingoats we saw some years ago near radium hotsprings are a related species - so you can get your own "shaving brush" right in your own province .
just keep away from those sharp prongs - OUCH .

@hamburger,
Mr. H, do you see those hats commonly still, or just a little?

Roberta, am I correct to believe the fedora hats were common in the 1930s and 40s?

@Reyn,
reyn :

in bavaria and austria they are stil fairly commom - but perhaps not as common as a baseball cap .
i understand those with a true gamsbart can be quite expensive - probably as much as a couple $ 100 .

i thought this px might be approproiate - i note that the hats all seem to be without the shaving brush .

@Reyn,
reyn :

i bought this "little red number" (with appropriate red coat) for mrs h when we were visiting vienna in 2001 .
while she is generally not too fond of hats , she really enjoys this one and wears it frequently - i'm glad glad i talked her into it - it reminds the both of us of a wonderful holiday .

According to Wikipedia, fedoras were popular from the 1920s to the 1950s. They were popular with the men in my family for longer than that.

@Reyn,
august 1939

my dad "outfitted" for his weekly visit to his company's headoffice :
fedora , glencheck suit , shirt and tie , highly polished shoes , walking stick (with umbrella hidden inside - very neat !) ... a turkish cigarette !

Thanks Roberta! I knew the dates were around there somewhere! Wink

Really? I wouldn't have guessed. It looks so thin. I bet it must have been a pain to put back into the umbrella.

And thanks for your new hat photos!

@Reyn,
the walking stick part of the umbrella was made of some kind of plastic - perhaps bakelite - and was collapsible . so when it was removed one could easily collapse it- probably no longer than 20 cm total and put it into a briefcase or even just into a pocket .
the dry umbrella was folded tightly and would slip easily into the shell . of course , when dad wasn't at home , we'd play with it ! <GRIN>

of course , you know this one .
on holland america line cruiseships , for "dutch dinner" night , the ladies all receive this kind of hat and the men are given a "dutch boy" cap - have to look for a pix .
