According to the BBC, this ancient figure is wearing what they believe to be the world's oldest hat:
The ancient figurine's
"hairstyle" is now thought
to be a hat
Quote:
Woven clothing may date back at least 27,000 years, according to archaeological evidence left by stone age hunter-gatherers.
Previously it had been thought that weaving had been invented by settled farmers just 5,000 to 10,000 years ago.
The new information means features on figurines thought to be prehistoric hairstyles are actually the first known hats.
The clues came from 90 fragments of clay found in the Czech Republic, at well-known sites including Dolni Vestonice and Tavlov. They reveal the impressions of interlaced fibres. . . . http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/725803.stm
I actually have some yarn that looks just like that. Do you suppose they crocheted way back then?
Hello Mr. H! Welcome to my online hat collection! You will notice that if you look a few posts up, Reyn already has this one in the closet.

@Foxfyre,
Hi Ms. Fox! Thanks for your addition to my collection. I didn't know that was the world's oldest hat. I'm sure they knew how to crochet in olden times. Look at basket weaving, for example.
From NYC's Easter parade. Note the matching nail polish. How chic.

And this jewel at a 2006 international education conference in Bahrain went for the Guiness World Record for biggest hat:
Quote:

Manama, April 18 ( BNA ) World's biggest hat ever made has been unveiled here on the sideline of the Middle East Exhibition and Conference for Professions, Education and Training 2006 opened here on Tuesday in Bahrain.
The 6 m x 6 m x 4.5 m - hat will be officially estimated by representatives of Guiness World Records Encyclopedia. The university hat symbolizes efforts of the Government aimed at enhancing Bahrain's position as a pioneering educational hub in the Middle East. http://english.bna.bh/?ID=43878
Personally I can't believe that's the biggest hat, but hey it's an education conference
