If this is going to be an extended recovery and you need to be able to type for work/pleasure, you might consider a small investment of about $200 for a microphone/headset and voice recognition software.
I use this a lot with my transcription work and it prevents a lot of wrist and finger aches from prolonged typing.
You're probably already doing this too if you've had extensive hand surgery, but one of those squeezable wads of stuff people use as stress relievers provides excellent physical therapy to help your hand recover faster and more thoroughly. I severed some tendons and nerves in my wrist many years ago when my hand slipped from a window casing I was trying to open and shattered the window. That stress reliever physical therapy still comes in handy now and then to relieve occasional stiffness and pain.
That red hot pain you're feeling is probably from the nerves. An ice pack will help numb it a bit.
