I have a 1983 Mercedes 300D. The ignition switch was replaced about one year ago. Recently I have had to move the steering wheel slightly to turn the ignition on occasion. The ignition switch now will not turn at all. I am not sure if the switch is bad again, or if the steering lock is interfering. I believe the power steering pump has been making a noise recently, but I'm not sure if that was the source, or if it would even be related. I'm poor, and I need the car running. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
@Rod300D,
your steering lock is most likely the culprit, or your switch has placement issues.
Doubtful as to faulty switch, no to power steering involvement.
(what kind of car are we discussing here?)
@Rod300D,
Spray the ignition with WD-40 and let it sit for 10 minutes. Crank hard on the steering wheel in both directions, then give it another try.
Agree with the previous posters. Straightening out your wheels before turning off the ignition will help prevent this in future.
@Tai Chi,
Thank you all for your speedy replies. I sprayed the ignition switch with wd40. The wheels are straight. I try turning the switch while turning the steering wheel in both directions. Still, the key won't budge. Any other suggestions?
@Rod300D,
what make and model car...

@Rod300D,
Get a bit forceful with the wheel back and forth, and work the cylinder vigourously, paying heed to the fact that the key will be the first piece to give.
If not, then you will prolly have to take it to the shop. (not as simple to work on as some)
good luck
also...
Is it fully in Park ?
@Rockhead,
Yes. I've moved it in and out of park several times and have worked the wheel and key vigorously back and forth. Still the same result. Again, thank you for the response.
@Rod300D,
At this point, I'm inclined to think the problem is with the steering lock. Any thoughts?
