Name three things you wanted as a child but never got.

A dog
To not move back to California after eighth grade
To not have to give a speech in school

and other more complex family stuff

(got dogs myself as an adult, always had to give the speech, did move back to California - lonely due to circumstances after that, but ended up loving it and staying another 45 years)

@ossobuco,
I missed eating chicken wings. I love chicken wings nowadays but when i was young i was really poor and chicken wings were something that I never got to enjoy. The moist flesh, the crispy skin....yum!

@The Nexus,
I've often noticed that deprivation can make one savor something once you get it..
for more than a year, I lived in a studio/gallery with no shower, and had to shower at a work facility or at friends' places. That was a long time ago and I still really appreciate them.

Enjoy your chicken wings..

I can only think of one big, overarching thing I wanted all throughout childhood, and it's certainly put to shame by all these poignant, important things you guys are talking about... Embarrassed but I'll bore you all with it anyway...

I read this book when I was little:

...and forever after was absolutely consumed with wanting to live in gypsy wagon. I thought about it constantly and would fall asleep at night imagining how it would be laid out and everything...

Oh, now I just found the perfect picture of how I imagined me and my wagon:

Yep, me and my flowing gown and in a flowery bower and everything...Laughing I was such a dopey kid...Come to think of it, I think I STILL want that!

@cyphercat,
The early life of a designer/artist...

(I used to draw strange and wonderful houseplans. Well, now I think they were wonderful.) I would have saved a lot of sweat and tears if I'd decided I wanted to be an architect/artist at a young age instead of doctor/scientist.

@ossobuco,
osso and cyphercat, I can relate to your dreams. As a child I wanted to live in a cozy underground burrow, accessed by a tiny door hidden between large roots at the base of a huge tree. (Wind in the Willows? Swiss Family Robinson? More recently, the Redwall series?)

@cyphercat,
The desire to create and live in a mythical safe dwelling is a Jungian desire of many people. My nieces all built "fairy houses" in our woods and I have artist friends and clients who have built little rustic studios with fireplaces and stained glass windows. I'm sure some people dream of McMansions, but I think most people crave a cozy, vine covered cottage or tree house. My clients with the largest, most sprawling houses always request things like a "secret garden" or a "magical, intimate garden space" .

Yeah; when I was 8,
I built a tree house in my backyard;
electrified, but no running water
I used to go up there and read.

@Green Witch,
Yeh, and Michael Pollan has too...

I dunno re Jung, but I also had a daydreaming thing about a cozy dwelling for me down in the earth below our big pine tree in Evanston. There was some sort of ladder entry from a "trapdoor", and then a room with a mattress floor lined with bookshelves and, along with the addition of pillows and blankets, a refrigerator with chocolate bars and crackers and and and.
I think I failed to consider bathroom facilities.

@cyphercat,
Please, if that Gypsy Cart picture is a wall hanging that I can buy, would you please tell me what the name of it is and if you have it, where you bought it at? I am looking for just such a picture for my living room.

Thanks Smile

When I was 8, I built a treehouse in my backyard
and bought some rabits; its not too late.

All I wanted was a real father, a home, and security. There were other important things I truly needed, but these were what I was conscious of.

1- To continue living near my friends and family instead of moving far away from them.
2- To be invisible or at least not heckled as a new student at a new school. (Multiple times.)
3- My mother to be married to someone who knew how to behave like a decent person.
