The billionth jar of vegemite!

Quote:
Yesterday Ms Cavanagh, 56, joined other actors from the commercial and past and present Kraft employees and their families to celebrate the production of the one-billionth jar of Vegemite.

Ms Cavanagh was seven when she was selected from her class at the Helen de Paul School of Dance to appear in the original ad. She remembers the cherry picker lifting her on to the jar and that a long table of lunch for the dancers did not include Vegemite sandwiches.

"For a seven-year-old it was an exciting thing," said Ms Cavanagh, who lives in Sydney, where she is a part-time office worker. "Television was only three years old in Australia."

But she did not realise the place of Vegemite in Australian folklore until the ad underwent a make-over in the 1990s, complete with coloured-in cheeks on her young face.

Vegemite was created by the chemist Cyril Callister in 1922.

Many of us (ie the sane) have greater ambitions for our lives. The edibility of this... byproduct of crude oil refining is highly overrated. I suspect that there are like 7 half-used jars of the stuff on the planet. The other 999,999,999,993 lie unopened in some huge ware-house somewhere with Elvis, the real Kennedy shooter, several UFOs, Geoege Bush's credibility and Amy Winehouse's talent.

@Mr Stillwater,
and I missed this.....

****!

I'm a great Vegemite fan - known to make my long-suffering mate go trawling the bleak streets of Melbourne in the early(-ish) hours because the hotel didn't supply Vegemite for breakfast (no wonder we didn't go back there again!)

and there 's this: http://able2know.org/topic/3575-1

@Mr Stillwater,
Now THAT is just unaustralian!

The other use for Vegemite is of course "bucks night ball blackening" and I suspect this is where the other 999 billion have been used.

Jeez.
You people! and you call yourself Australians!!![/b]

I once tried to interest the owner of a French B&B in the value of Vegemite - which we brought down to breakfast.

At the same time, I was trying to teach his budgerigar to say "G'day, Mate".

I had zero success with both these enterprises.

I told him budgies were Australian birds, and he should be able to speak Australian. He assured me the bird in question came from Limoges, and certainly wasn't Australian.

I don't think he was an Aussie lover - although our money was fine!

@msolga,
You obviously have not attended enough bucks nights then msolga. a situation which should be remedied forthwith.

I suggest you get some little twirly tassels and a G string and hang out in King st for a bit.

Have pity on the afflicted. Booze-free for... well... days, margo has succumbed to an evil called teetotalism. Pray for our fallen comrade (or send her a bottle..)

@Mr Stillwater,
Thanks, Stilly

Another almost sober weekend!

Helped friend prepare eulogy on Saturday.

Visited another mate in psych hospital on Sunday.

Opened a bottle of chardonnay on Friday night, poured one glass and couldn't drink it.

Looks like I'm on the sobriety track all right! Sad
