I find it ironic that after all our worries about terrorism and foreign countries (going all the way back to the cold war), the greatest threat to the American way of life turned out to be from massive internal incompetence. That's pretty pitiful. The world's first hyper-power economically and militarily, crushed within a few years of ascension by simple mismanagement.
Just thought I would mention that.

It was a wake-up call, but I'm not so sure the majority still understands what this bailout is all about, and how it'll impact their pocketbooks and pensions.

The majority never will. It will become a part of history as much as the changes after the great depression have become a part of ours.
