I was noodling around with the thumbs up/thumbs down symbols on my what do you collect post when suddenly it was voted down and disappeared. Wha happen?

If you thumbs down it - it collapses from view. It should have a place that says it is voted down or something that shows "view" - you then can click it and thumbs up it and it will show up on your list again. I am pretty sure that is the way it works.
