There's a benefit to voting down; the topic or post disappears from your view.

Haven't seen much benefit to voting up, though.

So, screw you guys, I'm voting you down.

@mismi,
Don't bother Missy, unless Craven decides to allow negative numbers, I wll level off at zero.

Popularity is for the shallow.

@Rockhead,
I just gave you a thumbs up for the shallowness comment and a thumbs down for the double post. The second post disappeared from view and the scoring is a wash. That's about the only reason I can foresee using the thumbs down on a post -- to hide a duplicate from view.

@mismi,
Rog, I don't care for the rating system either. I recall when I became a member of the Realm, I told Craven that I was happy that there were no "valuables" or "not valuables".

As Friar Laurence observed in Romeo and Juliet:

There is no herb however bad that doesn't contain some good, and vice versa.

That's a paraphrase, incidentally

@mismi,
dammit...the delete button is a problem...I have to think more before posting willy nilly now. Clicking thumbs up willy nilly is one thing...posting idiotic things is another. oh hell.

@DrewDad,
Most of the benefits will only come with scale. For example, if you are just changing a number on the screen it's pretty pointless. However with enough data better things can happen. For example it can be part of a weighed algorithm against sock puppetry.

@Craven de Kere,
I get that there will be benefits. Interesting and/or informative threads will bob to the top.

I was posting in opposition to those "I'll never be negative" folks.

@DrewDad,
I know, and I think you pointed out the big difference between this rating system and the others they have experience with: this one does more than just change a number and will serve a greater purpose.

You pointed out a good one in the form of the negative vote, that the topic or post is actually then removed for you. And I was just saying that the positive vote is one whose benefit will become more apparent with scale.
