The photo is not very good because we used my daughter's toy digital camera. Also it is in a shady area. I may be able to get a better photo with my wife's digital camera. I will post a better photo as soon as I have one.
How about some scale? How big is each leaf? To me it could be anything between a vinca with leaves 1/2-3/4 inch long and a rhododendron with leaves up to 3 inches long.

Thank you, Swimpy and littlek. I will post another photo in about 4 weeks. Right now the leaves are about 1 and a half inches.

Id say vinca also. However it could also be a bay plant (bay leaf) , I believe its a small leafed form of laurel. Are the leaves spicy smelling when you rub them?

It looks like vinca to me. Be careful -- it's an invasive species and very hard to get rid of!

a few guesses
azalea, rhododendron camelia.
Pretty sure its not a laural, at least not like the ones we get here.

Thanks, dadpad. I will post another photo in about 4 weeks. It may be easier to identify at that time.

I've just had a look at my bay tree. I dont think thats what yours is. My bay tree has more obvate (wider at the tip) leaves but I could easily be wrong.

another vote for vinca.
They're good for kids to grow, you can't hardly kill them.
The plant will die when the cold weather comes, but in the Spring you'll have lots of little seedling, which you can just pluck up.
AKA periwinkles.

Thanks, Chai. Right now, the plant has a tiny bud at the top. In 4 weeks I might know how it flowers, unless Chicago's early frost kills it. (No one should ever doubt any pronouncement made by farmerman.)

btw, the seedlings I let grow from the plants I bought last Spring have all remained really small, so they fill in small places nicely. you can easily scoop one up and replant it where you need a little fill or color.
I don't know if it's normal for the 2nd year seedlings to remain small.
The plants I got last year, for like .69 cents a piece ended up being huge, the biggest was a least 5 feet across and maybe 2 feet high. The white flowered ones seem to get the biggest. At least mine did. The pink and purple ones were a couple of feet across.

Interesting, Chai.
I am not much of a gardener. We have a townhouse. We share a strip of dirt with eleven other townhouses. But, this is starting to become a fun project.

I still don't think it's vinca. The leaves are too long and it doesn't seem to be growing as a creeping ground cover.
