@Foxfyre,
The Romanian marathon runner was amazing.
The speed walking resembled the march of the penguins.
CBC has less commercials than my local NBC. Just wish Don Cherry was covering with MaClean.
Forty one eary old United States swimmer Torres eased my growing pains.
Jamacas Bolt. Wow.

Agree with all, Alex--I didn't see the speedwalking but did watch all the other. And even for those who got tired of seeing Michael Phelps' grin, he did make Olympic history with his 8th gold medal yesterday and he and his medley teammates smashed 7 world records and 1 Olympic record earning them. I was HUGELY annoyed at NBC who kept the camera trained on Michael's face during the National Anthem in the final medal ceremony, however, and never even panned across the other three. That I thought was in extremely poor taste on the part of NBC--the other three guys were deserving of recognition just as much, and their friends and families deserved to see them.

The other embarassment for me yesterday came from a USA spoiled brat of of a boxer who threw a hissy fit when he lost his bout and stormed away from the arena. Extremely disgusting. This is sharp contrast for great olympians like Johnson, Trickett, Torres, and even Bernard of France, all who are disappointed when they lose, but who seem genuinely happy for those who beat them. THAT's how it should be and all are true champions even with lesser medals.

But there were other great moments yesterday. Torres and Bolt were certainly among them--hooray for Jamaica (which is not one of my team countries)! The one that made me cry was the marathon runner, well behind the leaders, who toughed it out and finished though she was obviously in a great deal of pain. She had to quit the race in a previous competition and was determined not to do that this time even though she knew early on she had no chance to win.

The coming week should be eventful too with new heroes to cheer.

His parents never taught him to lose, and when it spills over into adulthood
it rather becomes nasty, doesn't it?
While playing games with kids, teaching them how to lose is a very important
part of their character building.

True enough, Jane. There is more than one way to be an honorable winner, and all kids should be taught that good sportsmanship is one of them.

I also have been bothered by frequent descriptions of Michael Phelps' training schedule, along with suggestions that it will be the norm from now on. All this guy has done is eat, sleep, and train 24/7 and he has had essentially no life outside of that routine. As wonderful as a gold medal is, the event is a few seconds or minutes out of a person's life. Is it reasonable to give up so many great opportunities in one's youth just for that? I thrill at the struggle for and achievement of excellence, but I am also conflicted.

@Foxfyre,
my signature on a number of forums comes from Max Jackson, a sportscaster in the 1960's back in my hometown

he ended every sportscast with "if you can't play a sport, be one"

I think it's a good way to live a life.

-- of course jespah could him, but we all guess she'd rather not... to avoid his trash talk (which we actually miss)

Absolutely.

Question to Fb: Why can't RealJohnBoy reply? He can't get into the new A2K? Can we fix that?

Well shoot. We can't have this competition without RJB. Maybe he could create a new account as "JohnBoy" or something until he can get his old ID back. Several members have done that. We promise not to make fun of him. Smile

@fbaezer,
After spending the first week at no better than 20th place, my 2nd-week-heavy team is making its move. 16th place yesterday, and 14th today. A few more Jamaican sweeps in track, and all I'll need is for my Cuban boxers to pull through on the last weekend to make a Jason Lezak-like comeback in this competition.

We've got a new leader!

1. realjohnboy (WIFF's) - 590 points
2. alex - 586
3. Patada Veloz (Fantasy Warriors) - 571

4. hingehead - 565
5. Capitalgull (British Dreamers) - 557
6. markr -547
7. fom2020 (Pancho's Olympic Team) - 540
8. tgordon92 (Chicago 2016) - 539
9. jespah (Ring-o-leave-os) - 538
10. Barneyhull - 536
11. MyOwnUsername - 535
12. Calamity Jane - 533
13. fbaezer - 528
14. wandeljw - 521
15. EhBeth - 513
16. jpinmilwaukee - 509
17. fidell (Castro's Champion Kiwis) - 487
18. cicerone imposter - 484
19. Pantalones - 468
20. Foxfyre (Night Owls) - 464
21. McGentrix - 456
22. ossobuco (Dolphinkicking Dogpaddlers) - 443
23. MrKingsley - 430

26. Diane (PDQ Geckos) - 397
27. Imur (THIOS) - 350
28. ElStudHoncho (Fighting Gerbils) - 341

--

MOU loses ground, tgordon92 is making a huge comeback from the bottom of the standings; jpinmilwaukee, true to his tradition, falters in the second half of the competition, Diane joins George & Tico's personal dispute and the everfighting Gerbils are effectively challenging Imur.
