A dog has rushed to the aid of a woman knocked over and savaged by a large kangaroo on her New South Wales farm by chasing the animal away, the woman's son has said.

Rosemary Neal was attacked near Mudgee, in the west of the state, by a male kangaroo estimated to be up to two metres tall and weighing about 100 kilograms as she crossed a field to check her horses, her son Darren Neal said.

"The kangaroo has just jumped up and launched straight at her. He hit her once and she just dropped and rolled," he said.

"My dog heard her screaming and bolted down and chased him off.

"If it wasn't for the dog she'd probably be dead."

The 65-year-old woman was taken to hospital after the attack on Friday.

"Her face has been ripped apart, her hand has been mauled, and she's got scratches all over her back and concussion," Mr Neal said.

The region has been overrun by kangaroos in recent years.

"The whole town has been complaining about these kangaroos - you can't drive down the street without swerving to miss them," Mr Neal said.

Poor lady. I was once attacked by a half grown deer, with horns no more than two inches long. They have heads that feel like they are made of cement. Didn't get hurt, but it scared the hell out of me.

Ain't the boxing...it's those strong back legs.

But really, attacks are almost unknown.

Very gamey....but lean and healthy.

Lots of people like them.

Most generally one doesn't take guns to fend off roos while checking one's horses.

Murricans!

They can be pretty scary - especially if they're hungry.

I had a couple of roos try and take some chocolate caramel cake from me once - and they were taller than I was. And there were some parrots trying to sit on my head at the time, as well.

Bloody nature! (This was at Pebbly Beach on the NSW south coast - great place really!)

Kangaroo is great to eat - needs minimal cooking or it gets tough. A quick sear to medium rare and you're good to go! Very lean red meat.

Jeez, it's worth a person's live to take a stroll across the lawn on that continent. Anything that doesn't drag you into the river, attack in packs, or spit poison is only waiting for a chance to stomp you to death.

Good Dog!
