I've seen many Rain Soft softeners, usually from .7 cuft to 1.5 cuft, and have never seen one large enough to use more than 50-60 gallons of water per regeneration and most, like 90%, won't use 30-35 gallons.
Also I sell large softeners, like 4.0 cuft and they barely use 150 gallons per regeneration (over an hour and a half).
Your old Rain Soft probably has a stuck piston and that can cause broken shear pins which means it is stuck in a regeneration. If so and I recall correctly, the motor runs and contact switches operate but the piston doesn't move.
