Can anyone tell me about the artist R. Lorrain? I have a print (lithograph?) of his which I bought in London. It shows a town in ?southern Europe with a defensive tower and a church/cathedral with two spires behind. The print is numbered 71/350.
The number 71/350 simply means it was the seventy-first impression made from the stone out of a total run of 350 impressions.
You perhaps refer to René Lorrain. I suspect you will find it very difficult to find either biographical information or information on René Lorrain's opus--i know i did, and i began searching confident that it would not be that difficult. I was wrong.
Good luck.
I bought a painting by R.Lonain(?) at an auction the scene is a town on a lake or river, number at the bottom is 180.Sed (? on the Sed)
@Setanta,
The spelling is different than that of R. Lorrain, it looks like R. Lorain
Thanks
I have a painting #35.300 on which the signature appears to be R. Loirain but I suppose it could b R. Lorrain. It is obviously quite old and was handed down to me from my father's great aunt. Frame is very old as well.
A blue sky/white clouds - looks like a church of some type in the middle with a pathway leading to it...small trees on the left and taller trees on the right.
Of any help?
@Anglais,
we have one that fits your description numbered 134 of 200 like you we don't know the title and the total number of prints is different
@dredmond,
the description I was referring too was the one with the church with twin towers and a guard building in front, it is nicely framed and 24x17 again 134/200
