Rainsoft Water Softner

I purchased a house in 2004 that had a Rainsoft Q2 Water Softener installed. Until now, I have had no problems with it but a few weeks ago the motor began to hum. I promptly unplugged the unit and called a repair man last week.

The repair told me that the teflon inside the valve had worn out and that I really needed an entirely new valve. This system was purchased in 1991 so I know that it is getting a bit old. The repairman told me that he could install a new Fleck control valve for $700.

Everything that I read says that Fleck makes some of the best valves around so that doesn't bother me. What bothers me is that I have seen brand new complete Fleck systems for the same price that the repairman wants to put just a new valve on my Rainsoft system. Know that the system is already nearly 20 years old, should I just go ahead and get a new Fleck and install myself?

The repairman told me that the new valve would have a 25 year warranty, does the complete Fleck system have a warranty like that? Am I being had?

All help is much appreciated.

Duh! A whole new system for the same price of just changing the valve ona 20-YEAR OLD system?

Obviuosly, get the new system. After it is put in take a look at the resins, if you can from the old softener and compare them, if you can, with the new system.

As for the warranty, I would still go for the new one. Where would the new system come from? If you can get it locally, then do that as well. That way they can take care of problems. Avoid getting a timer softener. Get a demand model.

I bet the piston froze and sheared the drive motor pin.

Pull the piston, replace the O rings, replace the sheared pin and your back in business.

If you were local I would do the work for you - I can also do the work if you ship the valve to me ...

Hope that helps.

The Clack version of the Fleck seals, spacers and piston design is way better than Fleck's. So look at a a softener with a Clack WS-1 control valve.

His $700 is for his time, labor and travel plus the price of the valve. His 25 year warranty may not cover anything other than the valve body, or he doesn't plan on being around in 25 years... but read it first if you go with a new Rainsoft anything; which I strongly suggest against, they are using modified Fleck 5000 and 5600 valves. You should save a few thousand dollars and buy online and install it yourself. It is very simple plumbing and you already have a softener there.

I don't think a new valve or system is what's needed here.

Chances are really good that the system can be repaired
for far le$$ than buying something from Flack or Cleck.

As I said, all national brand types say replace rather than fix.

Oh really?? Rolling Eyes

I guess you consider yourself a national brand replace rather than fix type of seller ... now we know.

How many did you fix last week? Oops! That's right, you don't install or service equipment - you just drop ship and move on.
