I'm personally insulted that there is no beer thread.

I'm a bit of a beer newby, so does anyone have any particular recommendations? I don't want to spend more than $4 a bottle for trying out new ones and all the online recommendations I find tend to point at $12/bottle beers. Bunch of bourgeois swine.

My current favorites: Köstrizer Schwarz and Full Sail Pale Ale.

I also like a good Hefeweizen and was a fan of Franziskaner, but it just doesn't taste the same imported (I'm in the U.S.). I'd really like a recommendation for a good Hefe - so far I've only tried imported Franziskaner and Pyramid.

No beer thread, you say? Hmmm.... I think not. But, I'm too busy enjoying my dogfish head IPA to go look it up.

Yeah, there've been beer threads, just not recently, everyone's too busy tearing at one anothers throat in other threads over the election, guns, whatnot.

I recall a thread about beer and chocolate-- a winning combination.

I drink Budweiser. But a friend of mine likes lots of kinds of beers. She recently went to a beer tasting. Here's part of the list from her blog:

Stone Brewing Co.'s Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale. I've had the regular Arrogant Bastard and it's not that great, but the "Oaked" version is much better.

Deschutes Brewing Co.'s Obsidian Stout. Very smooth and not bitey. Their Black Butte Porter is also quite good. Hubby really liked their Hop Hence IPA as well.

Moylan Brewery's Ryan Sullivan Imperial Stout was quite good.
Utah Brewers Cooperative's Polygamy Porter ("why have just one?") was very good and smooth.

Green Mountain Brewing Co.'s ciders were good. I liked the Pear Cider best, but the Granny Smith Apple cider was also pretty good (although less sweet).

Johnson Brothers of Nevada's Weihenstephaner Korbinian was sweet and honey-flavored, like mead. It was the least beer-tasting beer at the event but if you like mead you might like it.

Euro Brew Inc.'s Monty Python Holy Grail was an English bitter. I don't normally like non-porters/stouts, but this one was actually quite good.
Euro Brew Inc.'s St. Peter's Cream Stout was pretty good.
Unibroue USA Inc.'s Quelque Chose was served mulled (spiced and heated). It tasted like cinnamon and apple cider.

Merchant Du Vin's Samual Smith Nut Brown Ale was VERY good, which surprised me because I don't normally like brown ales that much.
Hubby really liked Merchant Du Vin's Samual Smith Imperial Stout, but I thought it was a bit too bitey. He also liked the Samual Smith Organic Cider but I thought it was a bit too sweet.

I don't know the brewery (they weren't in the tasting book) but someone was serving a Bison Chocolate Stout that was very good, almost as good as Young's Chocolate Stout.

The best beer made in the USA is "Chesterfield IPA" made by a teeny brewery in Pa called Yuengling. It is a beer that is mostly spoken for in Pa and NY so much doesnt seep past the boarders.

I used to enjoy quaffing a few, but then I went totally abstemious. I miss my Chesterfield with a plate of soft pretzels and ginger mustard.

Give me a good German beer and I'll drink it. Mexican beer is okay too.

HEy CJ, thats a "marketing statement" from the Germans. My Yuengling is made from deep artesian well water, the choicest Davis Hops and the original malted wheat and barley. It is a classic . Most German beers were ok but for real taste, gimme a Chesty. Its made for food. German beer is drunk just to get slammed

With Jane in mind, but for others too: my beloved Budweiser, commercial to the bone, contains only malt, rice, hops, yeast, and water. No chemistry class needed to read the label.

Bottled beer from anywhere is preserved by pasteurization, which allows it to be stored without refrigeration. Draught beers are not pasteurized, and must be kept chilled or they will spoil.

It's perfectly all right to say you don't care for commercial American beers -- many people think they have no taste at all. But the proliferation of microbreweries and master brewers who take pride in their work and the ingredients they use -- surely you can't make blanket statements like "I don't like American beer" any more!

I have been trying to convince people who think they are culinary geniuses, that Budweiser goes very well with certain foods. It's a good light tasting beer.

I loves me some mini kegs. I wonder if I could find some of that Oberon nearby...

I agree with CalamityJane, German beer is awesome. But you start getting problems with imports :/. For example, I believe they have to add preservatives in order to sell them in the U.S., but don't quote me on that. At the very least, a lot of the beers have tasted different, with the exception of Köstrizer.

That Bretze reminds me of when I visited the kitschy Hofbräuhaus Wink. Dirndls, beer, and pretzels everywhere, and the outlines of swastikas around back.

hrm... I've never had a Budweiser. I've had "Miller High Life", though, and it tasted like piss. So, naturally, I use it for boiling brats. (mmm, piss brats).

Cool! Wie geht's? Very Happy

When I was in the Heidelberg area, Rothaus was cheap (compared to American beer prices for comparable awesomeness)! You could get a mini-keg for 13 Euro! (hmm, this site doesn't like unicode) Around here a Heineken mini-keg is $20+!

As at the time that was about $14/5L = ~$1/American-sized beer. That's less than some high-quality micros around here. Lucky German bums!

I can't find anywhere around here that imports it so I'll either need to do a special order through a local beer shop or find something online... not having much luck online, though!
