I spent a long time in the Navy, including Rickover's Nuclear Power Training, but never met a submariner that I really liked. They tend to be elliptical types (in the mathematical sense - they crave definite boundary conditions all around them). The subs and targets thing is a monotonous mantra that they all spout, each doing so in a way that makes one think they really believe they are being original.

Aviators are hyperbolic types, much more creative, imaginative and likeable. Moreover, they don't really believe all their own BS - though they do like to put it out.
