The other day I turned around in a parking lot...I was rather in a hurry, but that is nothing new for me....but after that my car started to smell of gasoline.
My car now has horrible gas mileage. I was wondering if anyone would hazard a guess as to the problem. I hate to walk into the shop a look like a "stupid girl". When I am at least talking like I know about the problem I get better service.
Any help is appreciated!
The first things to check are the fuel lines going to and from the
fuel filter (usually if you're smelling gas, the leak is most likely around the fuel filter which is usually mounted on the
firewall) and the line going into the
fuel rail (the pipe that distributes fuel to the fuel injectors).
Also, there may be a leak at the
fuel pump (see Electric pump section in the article) which is located inside of the gas tank, and depending on your car, may be mounted under your trunk or back seat.
Let's start over...
What is your car, and did you just fuel up, or is this an ongoing problem?

I had a car with a bad catalytic convertor and oxygen sensor. It also smelled of gasoline, and there were no leaks.
You probably sloshed gasoline into the vent tube. That leads to the charcoal canister under the hood. If that's the case, it should go away on its own over time. If it doesn't go away, revisit the problem.
It could also be that a line has fallen off the charcoal canister, or is cracked somewhere along the way. That is one of the few sources of gasoline under the hood that might be causing your odor.
