I have no idea what you mean, but there is another set of Ten Commandments.

http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/features/2000/carrier2.html

Created by Solon. Predates Moses' Ten Commandments. They are as follows:

1. Trust good character more than promises.
2. Do not speak falsely.
3. Do good things.
4. Do not be hasty in making friends, but do not abandon them once made.
5. Learn to obey before you command.
6. When giving advice, do not recommend what is most pleasing, but what is most useful.
7. Make reason your supreme commander.
8. Do not associate with people who do bad things.
9. Honor the gods.
10. Have regard for your parents.

Of course, Number 3 is kinda vague and obviously, Number 9 is a big constitutional no-no, as far as the United States is concerned. But still...

Not speaking critically, the ten commandments are supposed to be followed by christians. It is moses' law given to him by god.

When jesus came along, some of the old testament stuff was wiped away, hence the cultural differences in jewish life and christian life. Things like what you can eat, what's clean and not clean, etc, but the big things like the 10 commandments stuck around.

Typically in protestant churches, the OT is used for parables, demonstration, and example, but only the big rules are kept. For instance, nobody reads Psalm 137 in church which says "bleesed are ye who take their children and smash them against the rock"

That was my question
I purposely made some typing mistakes to project my ignorance.

Living a peaceful lie is not healthy.

curtis,

The original 613 Jewish laws are somehow completely ignored, despite being part of the Bible. Sure, Jesus flagged them off, but that was because they made little sense. They have only been replaced by other traditions which make no sense. Jesus is rolling in his grave.

Jesus may have ignored the 10 Cs when it suited him, but contrary to what most Christians believe, he never claimed to have superceded them. Jesus said, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of the pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:17-20)

Paul is the one who threw out the Laws of Moses, probably because it was tough to get converts to agree to dietary restrictions and circumcision. Paul never actually met Jesus and completely subverted his message to suit his own purposes. Paul is also the one who said that women were not to speak out in church or have authority over men, and women still cannot be priests in the Catholic Church. (Of course the Catholic Church conveniently ignores the NT requirement that bishops be married.)

Wolf, I can see why the other 10 are more popular. Solon's are better. But I think these commandments say a lot about the character of the God of the Bible (or at least that of his priests):

Destroy other religions' symbols and don't worship other gods

1. Don't make treaties or intermarry with your new neighbors.
2. Don't make idols.
3. Feast to remind you that I saved you
4. I get every first-born
5. Bring me stuff
6. Work 6 days, rest 1
7. All men must worship me 3 times a year
8. Don't mix blood with yeast, and don't let sacred food spoil
9. Bring me the first and best of your crops
10. Don't cook a kid in its mother's milk

My revised version of the 10 C's:

1. Respect the Earth that sustains us, which we hold in trust for future generations. Do not litter, pollute, or destroy its resources. Live such that the world is better place for you having been here.
2. Examine your own beliefs, and do not worship anything unworthy. Seek Truth and don't believe everything you read.
3. Do not use language offensive to your listeners. Be courteous and tolerant of other beliefs as long as they don't hurt anyone.
4. Eat right, exercise, and get plenty of rest.
5. Love and care for your spouse, your kids and your parents and do not physically or mentally abuse them.
6. Do not murder, or cause unnecessary pain.
7. If you make a commitment to someone, keep it in letter and in spirit.
8. Do not steal, or deprive others of what is rightfully theirs. Pay your fair share of taxes and contribute to the common good.
9. Do not lie, or through your silence allow injustice.
10. Learn to be happy for what you have instead of obsessing about what your neighbors have.

And finally,

11. Teach children to think, don't just give them a list of rules.

GEORGE CARLIN ON THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
from "Complaints and Grievances" (HBO special)

Here is my problem with the ten commandments- why exactly are there 10?

You simply do not need ten. The list of ten commandments was artificially and deliberately inflated to get it up to ten. Here's what happened:

About 5,000 years ago a bunch of religious and political hustlers got together to try to figure out how to control people and keep them in line. They knew people were basically stupid and would believe anything they were told, so they announced that God had given them some commandments, up on a mountain, when no one was around.

Well let me ask you this- when they were making this **** up, why did they pick 10? Why not 9 or 11? I'll tell you why- because 10 sound official. Ten sounds important! Ten is the basis for the decimal system, it's a decade, it's a psychologically satisfying number (the top ten, the ten most wanted, the ten best dressed). So having ten commandments was really a marketing decision! It is clearly a bullshit list. It's a political document artificially inflated to sell better. I will now show you how you can reduce the number of commandments and come up with a list that's a little more workable and logical. I am going to use the Roman Catholic version because those were the ones I was taught as a little boy.

Let's start with the first three:

I AM THE LORD THY GOD THOU SHALT NOT HAVE STRANGE GODS BEFORE ME

THOU SHALT NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD THY GOD IN VAIN

THOU SHALT KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH

Right off the bat the first three are pure bullshit. Sabbath day? Lord's name? strange gods? Spooky language! Designed to scare and control primitive people. In no way does superstitious nonsense like this apply to the lives of intelligent civilized humans in the 21st century. So now we're down to 7. Next:

HONOR THY FATHER AND MOTHER

Obedience, respect for authority. Just another name for controlling people. The truth is that obedience and respect shouldn't be automatic. They should be earned and based on the parent's performance. Some parents deserve respect, but most of them don't, period. You're down to six.

Now in the interest of logic, something religion is very uncomfortable with, we're going to jump around the list a little bit.

THOU SHALT NOT STEAL

THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS

Stealing and lying. Well actually, these two both prohibit the same kind of behavior- dishonesty. So you don't really need two you combine them and call the commandment "thou shalt not be dishonest". And suddenly you're down to 5.

And as long as we're combining I have two others that belong together:

THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTRY

THOU SHALT NOT COVET THY NEIGHBOR'S WIFE

Once again, these two prohibit the same type of behavior. In this case it is marital infidelity. The difference is- coveting takes place in the mind. But I don't think you should outlaw fantasizing about someone else's wife because what is a guy gonna think about when he's waxing his carrot? But, marital infidelity is a good idea so we're gonna keep this one and call it "thou shalt not be unfaithful". And suddenly we're down to four.

But when you think about it, honesty and infidelity are really part of the same overall value so, in truth, you could combine the two honesty commandments with the two fidelity commandments and give them simpler language, positive language instead of negative language and call the whole thing "thou shalt always be honest and faithful" and we're down to 3.

THOU SHALT NOT COVET THY NEIGHBOR"S GOODS

This one is just plain fuckin' stupid. Coveting your neighbor's goods is what keeps the economy going! Your neighbor gets a vibrator that plays "o come o ye faithful", and you want one too! Coveting creates jobs, so leave it alone. You throw out coveting and you're down to 2 now- the big honesty and fidelity commandment and the one we haven't talked about yet:

THOU SHALT NOT KILL

Murder. But when you think about it, religion has never really had a big problem with murder. More people have been killed in the name of god than for any other reason. All you have to do is look at Northern Ireland, Cashmire, the Inquisition, the Crusades, and the World Trade Center to see how seriously the religious folks take thou shalt not kill. The more devout they are, the more they see murder as being negotiable. It depends on who's doin the killin' and who's gettin' killed. So, with all of this in mind, I give you my revised list of the two commandments:

Thou shalt always be honest and faithful to the provider of thy nookie.

&

Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone, unless of course they pray to a different invisible man than you.

Two is all you need; Moses could have carried them down the hill in his fuckin' pocket. I wouldn't mind those folks in Alabama posting them on the courthouse wall, as long as they provided one additional commandment:

Thou shalt keep thy religion to thyself.

Jesus himself seemed to be giving mixed messages.

I love your 10 Commandments.

Be as you are.
Live and let others live.
death is inevitable..

Christians should try to come out of their 10 cs.
Christians should not produce sexy Playboy or xyz silly biological bulging curve maagazines.
Christians should respect other belivers or non-belivers like me.

Bibel is a sort of printed book.
Nothing more.
Nothing less
Nothing else.
I will die without any 10 shiboleths.

Yeah, those 4 years of Seminary really left me clueless Smile

...and the content of which christianity; the biblical or the religious? They are two widely different things.

I like your one commandment. I personally have none, but in order to fit into society and survive I do have to pretend like this thing called "morality" is a viable entity.

Please explain how Biblical and religious are different things. I thought the one encased the other.

Hang on, so you're an atheist now?

Morality and atheism aren't mutually exclusive. Atheism just gives one the choice to part from his or her natural attributes. It makes one unobliged to be moral.

Sorry.
I am an athiest
and I need not have so many commandments
if i were decent, civilized citizen.
None of the athiests had done any wrong to others while many of the religious persons had violated the simple human laws.
