Our washing machine smells REALLY bad. We've tried pouring bleach into the machine with hot water and running it through, but it still smells moldy and musty... what do we do?

Is it a front loader or a top loader?

There are products sold that claim to get rid of washing machine odors. Google search "smelly washing machine".

I think you're on the right track though. If it's a front loader, look inside the rubber door seal - I bet it's full of mold/mildew. Scrub it off the best you can, then paint it with pure bleach. Pour some bleach directly in the tub with just one or two rags. Then do a "rinse and drain" only. Make sure to leave the door slightly ajar when not in use.

It's a top loader and we leave it open all the time... but now that it smells we keep it closed... we first thought it was the littler box... but nope... washing machine... alright, I'll google smelly washing machine, thanks!

This is likely a build up of lint, soap scum, and dirty fats and oils. Is there a filter to clean? Possibly located in the center column.

Proceedure
Overfill the machine with hot water (as hot as you can make it) and pour in 1 litre of vinegar. It is likely the buildup is just above the maximum water line under the rim. Keep a few towels/rags and a mop handy as it may slop over onto your floor

Over fill by filling to maximum capacity as per normal, stop the machine and pour in 1/2 bucket of hot water (more if your machine will take it). Add the vinegar. Agitate for 20 mins. As the machine drains watch what comes out of the drain hose.

You may need to do this several times to dislodge all the rubbish.

You may also wish to try bicarb soda. Overfill as above, add a 500g box of bicarb soda, agitate a little (1 min) to dissolve the soda, allow to stand overnight, empty the machine and rinse at normal levels.

If this does not work you may need to dismantle and clean the pipework and pump. also if you can remove the front/or side panell it may be worth cleaning inside the casing.

Using a flashlight, check all the inner parts you can see where the water rarely gets. Feel around the rim.
