Assuming that the vernal equinox, (3/20/08) is the first day of spring, we have 28 days more days of winter to endure.
Twenty-eight days is four weeks. Under the circumstances, four weeks is a long time.
Yesterday I had two blooming snowdrops and several dozen more that would bloom today--if they weren't being covered with inch-an-hour snow. The pussy willow catkins are fuzzy. Spring is trying to arrive.
If you have any omens of spring--or complaints about the shank end of winter, please post them here.
Staring out my back door wall during the winter, I can see hundreds of yards back, through all the bare trees.
Spring is here when a misty green wall starts to appear.
Hello Noddy. Hope all is well.
Alex--
Your misty green wall sounds like ideal habitat for unicorns. Keep a watch out.
Meanwhile, the snow is falling.
We're having an old-fashioned winter this year. Lots of snow, below zero temps, and gray, gray skies. I'm more than sick of it. 28 days I can survive but I won't be happy about it until it's over.
Spring flowers started blooming weeks ago around here and my Japanese cherries are in bloom ...
JPB--
At this time of the year I have a great deal of respect for people who endured injustice until the time arrived for change.
H2O Man--
I suppose the trade-off will come in July and August with Georgia heat.
**********
We have a good eight inches of snow on the ground and another two to four inches of snow, sleet and freezing rain to come. I've arranged for the plow to come tomorrow.
Vernal witch hazel in bloom, snow drops in bloom, daffodils sprouting up.....
Littlek--
Don't you also have snow falling down?
6-12 inches of snow in Boston, right now.
We had beautiful fluffy snow a couple of days ago, several inches' worth (I'd guess 5").
It mostly melted, but before it did, we got more snow on top of it (more pellety, less floaty).
Now we've got freezing rain, and ice EVERYWHERE.
Miserable.
No power outages yet though so could be much worse (knock on wood).
RP says he shoveled 6" of snow. It's still coming down. Gaahhhh
The Boston contingent has my sympathy. Out in Ohio, Soz has even more of my sympathy.
We have about 9 inches of snow between me and civilization. The plow is due this morning.
I heard a pileated woodpecker rat-tatting his territory. He's hopeful.
I heard a chickadee singing love songs this morning.
And in less than 2 weeks we'll be into our newly revised daylight savings time!!
Whoa, you're right. March 9th! That's sooner than I expected.
The ice ended up being a bother but nothing more than that, Noddy. Hard to get around but no disasters (on the order of fallen trees or power outages). Now it's warmer (30's) and generally unremarkable.
Forecast for tomorrow: More slop.
Ugh.
At least the weekend snow is melting.
We've got the slop.
Not a fan of slop.
Slop can be dangerous as well as unlovely -- take care!
Daffodils are already out as are the crocusses, forsythias are blossoming, too, the first storks are back ...
Walter--
Wave at the storks for me.
The slop may be rain--or it may be 2-4 inches of snow followed by an inch of ice.
Uncertainity is not necessarily pleasant.
Oh, I see. Slop from the sky, not slop on the ground.
We have slop on the ground, with more slop forecast. Same uncertainty.
Not a fan of that either.
