Water softener drain question

Reply Tue 12 Feb, 2008 06:12 pm
My basement has 10' ceilings and no floor drains...so I'll need to run the drain up the wall and over to the stand pipe on the sewer line where the AC condensate is connected. From everything I've read online it appears that you cannot run the drain tubing greater than 8' off the floor. It makes sense since the water pressure is all that drains the tank but what the heck am I to do??? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Also, I'm looking at Culligan, Ecowater, Kenmore, Whirlpool and GE. From the research I've done it appears that all of the aformentioned are manufactured by the same company except the Culligan unit. So with the Culligan unit aside, why pay more $$$ for the Ecowater softener if they also make the Whirlpool and Kenmore units? I'm fairly handy so having a "trained tech" install and repair isn't a necessity. Bottom line, if the Ecowater systems are truely superior (quality) then I don't mind spending the extra cash.

Actually it is 6-7' above the drain line connection on the control valve, not the floor. Most control valves will be from 4-6' off the floor.

Since you are handy, and I suspect a DIY, look up how to correctly size a softener for the family size and the SFR (service flow rating) gpm the house needs based on how many and what type fixtures, not just the number of showers. Then go with a Clack WS-1 control valve.

Go for an ECOwater system or the North Star brand - you will not regret it.

I do have some relatives who purchased an Ecowater system and they ended up hating it. I would go with something else so don't have to replace it.

On that note... during my 20 plus years of doing the H2O business in 3 different states I have never ever replaced an ECOwater product.
I have replaced just about any other name brand you can think of, but never an ECOwater product....

Go to the area where I used to live. You won't find a single one because Ecowater went out of business due to bad service.

Also, you don't replace Ecowater products if you already work for them.

Wrong.

I am an independent H2O specialist - I work for no one but myself and my clients.

And he is not mentioning the decade + 5-8 years of that 20 years that he was with Rainsoft and saying the same thing about them.

I've stated the facts over and over - you choose to ignore them...

Okay, I do believe that you don't work for them. I don't believe that's the ONE brand you've never torn out due to it not working or the customer not being happy with it. 20 years is a long time and I just don't believe it.

Yeah, and you have distorted those facts for your own benefit.

Thanks for the clarification on the drain height Gary. I'm going with the Ecowater system H2OMan. Better warranty than the others and the Culligan dealer is nuts to think there system is worth as much as they wanted.

All warranties are covered in the purchase price of the product and you should read the fine print on that warranty and realize that service call charges are not covered. So they end up giving you the part "under warranty" because they charged you for it/them in the purchase price but... then they charge you a very high service call charge to replace it/them.

IMO you should become a DIYer and pay thousands less all around by replacing a part yourself when needed. With national brands you are locked into the local dealer for parts and repair. Diyers can buy from many dealers; local or online.

Whatever... Rolling Eyes

The better quality systems usually require much less fix and repair service calls. Less down time alone is worth the extra $.
Also, professional maintenance with factory parts is recommended on all H2O systems no mater what the brand name is.

Congratulations qwik1320! Very Happy

I love how you overpriced national brand types spend other peoples' money.

Tell me, where do you buy parts for a softener that aren't "factory parts". LOL what you go to an auto parts store. LOL

What softeners need "maintenance" and what does that consist of? They wouldn't be the same overpriced ones you say "usually require much less fix and repair service" would they? I think so and you need to realize that maintenance and service are one in the same.

Evidently the Clack WS-1 needs maintenance and repair often because you go on
and on about how easy they are to repair with just the special tool Clack sells.
I don't know what the repairs consist of because I won't sell the Clack WS-1... my clients deserve better.
