Just reading back a bit. Want to thank those of you who made Bobbie Burns contributions. He's one of my favorite poets EVER. (See my signature line.) Hadn't read him in years. I enjoyed every word--even the ones I didn't understand.

@Barry The Mod,
Hey Hey Crew

Hoping all have a wonderful day today - the sun is shining here - it's beaaaaaaaaaautiful

I am wearing girl clothes!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Lawd!

Bazzzzzzzzzza - the marking down? Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.... I think I know what you are talking about mebbe - someone has been very active in thumbing my posts down all over A2K, not just on this thread, seemingly so on whatever I write, and I am aware of it now - but that's ticketyboo - it's definitely not 'G' doing it - we've talked and100% sure ... but there is someone following me <sad git - someone no likeee me - shame> so I might as well just call it out loud now - it's not my problem, it's really theirs - they can continue to thumb me down as often as they like - it makes absolutely not a jot of difference to me at all Razz Thumb away tho I have no idea why whoever is doing it chooses to do it, seems like a lot of wasted energy if you ask me. Nem'mind. Very Happy Don't worry about it Bazza - it really is their problem, not mine.

So, I'm off out shortly but will be back later.

Cannot believe how super stunning the day is today, big blue skies.

Missy - hope today is a good one for you girlie and the allergies calm down. Nearly the weekend Dixie - have you got games this weekend?

Boida - thinking of you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Flights have been disrupted across northern Europe by volcanic ash drifting south and east from Iceland.

Authorities were closing down airspace in the UK and Denmark. Flights were also severely disrupted in Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

The ash, which can damage aeroplane engines, was produced by a volcanic eruption under a glacier in Iceland.

Flooding was reported as the glacier melted, and up to 800 people were evacuated from the area on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses and local officials said there were two flows of flood water coming off the glacier in south-western, and that a road along the flooded Markarfljot river had been cut in several places.

By Thursday morning, the disruption to air traffic stretched from the UK to Scandinavia.

'Large floods'

Oslo airport, which is Norway's largest, was closed, while Finland's airport agency Finavia said air traffic to northern Sweden and northern Finland was also affected.

In Denmark, officials said airspace would be closed from 1800 (1600 GMT).

The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace from midday to 1800BST (1100-1700 GMT) amid fears of engine damage.

Airports in Scotland had already been shut earlier on Thursday and flights at several English airports had been suspended.

The last volcanic eruption at the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier was on 20 March - the first since 1821 - and it forced about 500 people in the sparsely populated area from their homes.

Iceland lies on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the highly volatile boundary between the Eurasian and North American continental plates.

A group of Norweigians including the ambassador who were camping near the volcano were among those expecting to be evacuated late on Wednesday.

"There are large floods on both sides of the volcano, and the road in (to where they are) is blocked and the whole area is isolated due to the floods," said Per Landroe, a spokesman for the Norweigian embassy.

"There are fears that a large bridge will break," he told AFP.

@Izzie,
That's amazing Iz. We were looking at the earthquake in China as well. My friends are moving there in July and thankfully it was not near where they are moving...but all those poor folks. Truly makes me thankful for what I have.

My allergies are driving me nuts this morning. My allergy meds are making me so sleepy. I love spring...but this pollen I can do without.

bunches to do today. If I am here then I am neglecting them...so I gotta get up!

Hugs to all,
mis

@Izzie,
Saw this in the news and wondered if it was affecting your air quality at ground level, Iz. I hope not, but I remember how much the Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines affected air quality world-wide in 1991-92. There was so much ash in the atmosphere that the amount of sunlight reaching the ground was reduced and temps were much colder than normal for over a year.

On a happier note, I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip. Hugs to you both.

@JPB,
Hey girlies

Well, apparently it's affecting Scotland a little bit - but no apparent signs here - the skies are very blue, brilliant sunshine, warm and the air quality seems to be alright. All flights have now been grounded until 7am tomorrow morning, unprecedented - there are folk stranded all over the UK and Europe as a whole and the ferries and eurostar are very busy.

The pics and video footage of Iceland are quite unbelievable - blackness...

the volcano is still erupting and no signs of slowing down either - horrendous for them - footage is all over the news here.

I'm taking myself off to take some pics later on and keeping myself busy this weekend but will be on and off the deck Very Happy

Missy - hope you feel better soon girlie and the pollen count drops <atishooo - bless you>

@Izzie,
Thank you for the cuppa. Expected that question from a 'nosy blonde'. Laughing

Went with Mrs. Beagle to a mate's birthday party, it was a good crew, and once we've found our tongues there was a lot of reminiscence about the good old days in Europe.

That needle by the way is to measure the creatinine levels in my system.

Hey crew,slow night at work.Same job all night.Boring! So I read the paper and this made me smile....

"The crucial dos and don’ts if you take a sickie.

You can guess from the name that something called The Forum for Private Business might lack a sense of humour.

The organisation has got its knickers in a twist over new wording on Coca-Cola's Vitamin Water that seems to condone workers throwing a sickie " taking a duvet day.

The usual dire prognostications followed. If just a handful of impressionable drones heeded the joky exhortation on their beverage bottle, British industry would lose a squillion pounds and the economy would find itself on a par with Zimbabwe's, etc. Well, my message to the FPB is: lighten up about sickies, because they're already happening.

The occasional dubious day off is one of the great pleasures of modern working life. For my generation, the practice was inculcated during schooldays, when an exaggerated sore throat or gippy tummy could be parlayed into a day on the sofa under a blanket drinking lime cordial and watching telly. Blame Dennis the Menace or the Bash Street Kids, whose school-skipping antics we emulated.

It was rare indeed, though, for this malingering absence to stretch beyond a single day. The allure of Crown Court quickly palled. And of course, you couldn't go out. So you rushed back through the school gates, rejuvenated by a deceitful 24-hour absence, to boast of your sickly histrionics.

The process transfers seamlessly to the world of work, only with bosses instead of parents " and no boasting, obviously. Again, it is unwise to stretch the time off beyond a single day, or to indulge in Ferris Buehler-style antics. You'd have to be pretty terminally sick not to answer your mobile so you're likely to get caught out if you are audibly at the cricket, or shopping amid the hubbub of Oxford Street.

As at school, plausibility is everything. The complaint should be bad enough to make it unwise to commute, or commune with co-workers, but fleeting enough to vanish with the morning dew. Claiming “food poisoning” will get you marked down as an unreliable drunk. Ditto choosing a Monday for your duvet day.

In my first job, I remember awaking on an overcast Tuesday in my then-girlfriend's flat in Greenford, just after she'd left for work, and deciding that my daily trek to Croydon was impossible today. I called a colleague (never speak to the boss direct " another important lesson), said I was sick, rented a VHS of Death Race 2000 from the local newsagent and settled in.

But as in childhood, the novelty of being at home all day wore swiftly thin. By 4pm I was desperate for conversation or activity. Even work.

This is the point. A moody sickie reaffirms one's appetite for toil. After a hooky day, the nose is re-applied to the grindstone with ardour. No one dares take more than one duvet day at a time, or more than a couple a year, for fear of inviting suspicion and the sack. AWOL days are a force for good in the workplace.

Not that I've ever taken one in my current job, of course. I wake each dawn with a song in my heart, eager to sprint to my computer screen. That said, I've got a bit of a gippy tummy today and the weather forecast is good. I might not be in tomorrow …"
Thank you London Evening Standard Wink
