THE FLAPPER
by Dorothy Parker
The Playful flapper here we see,
The fairest of the fair.
She's not what Grandma used to be, --
You might say, au contraire.
Her girlish ways may make a stir,
Her manners cause a scene,
But there is no more harm in her
Than in a submarine.
She nightly knocks for many a goal
The usual dancing men.
Her speed is great, but her control
Is something else again.
All spotlights focus on her pranks.
All tongues her prowess herald.
For which she well may render thanks
To God and Scott Fitzgerald.
Her golden rule is plain enough -
Just get them young and treat them
rough.

TRAVEL
In the early 1920s, as passenger train lengths grew and train schedules were tightened, the New York Central progressively built one heavier 4-6-2 after another. By 1926, however, it was clear that the 4-6-2 could no longer handle the increased demands of the railroad's premier trains. Thus, in collaboration with Alco, the Central set about designing a new and more powerful six-coupled passenger engine.
More power meant the need to evaporate more water, and this required a big firebox - bigger than could be supported by the 4-6-2's two-wheel trailing truck. With the lessons learned from Lima's new 2-8-4 fresh in mind, the New York Central designed its new passenger engine with a four-wheel trailing truck that could support a larger firebox. The resulting locomotive, a 4-6-4 numbered 5200, was delivered by Alco in February 1927.

ART DECO
Art Deco was introduced in the 1920's and reigned through the 1930's, encompassing both the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. It is an elegant style of decorative art and architecture reflective of Art Nouveau, yet with more modern sophistication.
