If you sign up for aarp, for one reason or another, you get the stupid magazine. Well, probably not entirely stupid, but it is if you read at all. False numbers there.

Texas Monthly is a very good magazine, and I say that in all sincerity.

Does Reader's Digest still exist? To me it was part of the Lawrence Welk-tv tray-reader's digest phenomenon of yesteryear.

It's funny. My mom read, and I was exposed to, the Reader's Digest in the 1940's. I have had a subscription to it for years. Nothing very intellectual, but it is the right size, and has the sorts of things that are perfect for reading when you are on the "throne".

As far as it being expensive, if you let your subscription expire, they send you offers for the magazine at cheaper and cheaper prices, until it costs about what it is worth, which is not a lot.

Depends on your definition of popularity. Circulation wise, AARP the magazine, formerly Modern Maturity, fits that bill.

To my mind, circulation, quantity of countries, where a magazine is sold and quantity of people, which know the mag, serve as a criterion for mag's popularity. Please advice if you have another.

I would have guessed, "Reader's Digest", but that came in 3rd. AARP, The Magazine, led the pack, with the AARP Bulletin coming in second.

My Auntie Phylis, bought me a subscription to Reader's Digest when I was about 8 and I read it from cover to cover (12 issues a year I think--in the post addressed to Master spendi) up to when I discovered my troubles has just begun at about 16. I was a late developer. Evolution shows that the faster you develop the stupider you are.

That's why I'm a proper American. Not one of those who admire fast development. Reader's Digest. I would say that my life would be completely different had my Auntie Phylis not chosen that magazine. I heard later that it was a CIA publication but I thought it's too late to bother about that now.

Actually, she wasn't my real auntie. She was my Mum's best friend and she got letters delivered at our residence from different far away places like London or Glasgow which I thought odd at the time but I have now come to see the rationale of it. She showed me a lot of other stuff too but all that would be off topic.

The rifleman's stalking the sick and the lame
Preacherman seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain
Nightsticks and water-canons, tear gas, padlocks
Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain
False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin
Only a matter of time 'til night comes steppin' in.
