It was about 75 today. A huge improvement over last weeks 90s.

I can't even imagine running laps with kids. I used to run with my kiddie
soccer teams, but it took all kinds of games to keep them at it. And even
then, chaos was never long in coming.

They were supposed to stay in a nice shady section while we did the running -- the chaos was in the distance. (Then came closer as middle kid came stomping over to complain about oldest kid hitting her -- you get the idea.)

Only 75. Hmm.

I definitely just plain drag occasionally, but I'm still enough of an amateur that I don't want to unduly extrapolate from that.

Keep an eye on things, and Don't Overdo It. (Doi?)

I've done over 9300 minutes of exercise so far this year. I suspect I didn't even do 93 minutes last year. Smile

You've got me beat by a long shot, jes. I've done about 7600 minutes this year.

It was interesting to go back and tally it up and see the patterns etc.

Good going, Jes and Mac!

-----------

Ran!

Trackmom has schedule conflicts this week so was just me and newbie again -- no kids this time though! (That's the nice part of having three people in the group, if one can't go, the other two still have each other.) Went the full workout. I'm at the point where I barely have to catch my breath after a lap. This is good. Hopefully by the time Trackmom comes back we'll be a little more evenly matched. (The laps weren't taxing her much last I saw her either.)

I've unambiguously dropped a clothing size -- also good.

So...

Mean Mister K. is the typical braggard. He claims superb times and is always critical of the rest of the guys' performances. He usually takes on the newbies, asks them "to stick" to his rhythm and talk while running with him, until he burns them out... which gives him good reason to boast and be critical again. I was burnt by him once or twice about a year and a half ago; now I know better not to "stick".
He's called "Mister K" because he's always talking about his mileage: "I did 14 K. in one hour today, I guess I'm a bit out of shape".
Mean Mister K. is even critical of The Queen of the Pacific, a girl who won the Pacific Marathon in 2006. He said her time (2:46) was no big deal.

Well, yesterday Mister K. was running behind the Queen of the Pacific while I was stretching. So I yell to him: "Stick, old man!". He did stick to her for a couple of laps, to keep his prestige, but you could tell she was at ease and he was struggling. I start running and after a little more than 1 K. I find Mean Mister K., almost breathless, already left behind by the Queen. As I am to surpass him he tells me to stick. This time I do (I know the Queen burned him) and we run and talk for a couple of Ks, until my breath starts going short. "Oh!", I cry, "I think I have a muscle pull", we slow down a little for a few hundred meters, I regain my breath and keep on going. After another couple of kilometers Mister K. says: "Well, my 12 K. for today are done, gotta go", I finish my 6 K. at a slightly slower pace, and make my best time on the distance.

Queen of Paciifc's time was fine by me; I used to follow Joan Benoit (was that the name?). Circumstances vary. I was never an athlete but can comprehend it.

Mean Mister K, fit for a short story. Actually, in place so far.

Oh, The Queen of the Pacific is damn fast! She normally laps me on the same place of the circuit: she does two laps when I do a little more than one. And when she's behind, you just hear her panting and suddenly shooosh!, she comes like a bullet. She's trained by Rodolfo Gómez, and is young olympic material for London 2012.

Mean Mister K. is 56 and nuts.

(yeah, I should do vignettes of many of the guys who run there: a diverse and fun lot)

Mean Mr. K reminds me of Mean Mister Mustard (takes him out to look at the Queen -- hey, it fits!):

Dancing, walking ... it's goin' on.

Still thinking about that balance ball thingie Jespah's doing. I think I need to make a little exercise space for myself downstairs. I was thinking of getting some of those interlocking rubber floor tiles they use for kids to play on - set that up in the basement with a radio/cd/ipod/dvd kinda arrangement. If I had a "space" I might be more tempted to add an at-home exercise element.

Good idea!

Love the hip-swivelin'-hippo.

Ran today. Didn't have a lot of oomph but got through it.
