Jes, Soz, EhBeth--

Thanks for the gentle nagging.

Last night the water weight started leaving--every hour, on the hour. I'm a bit bleary-eyed today and my exercise will be in strictly modulated amounts.

Hey, it's working. Inconvenient, but working.

I recall George once said, "Rest is a weapon." and he's absolutely right. I was stuck for a few days, then took yesterday off from walking (still did resistance bands and free weights) and am down another 1 1/2. We'll see if it holds until Monday but it's another milestone if it does.

Two Races in one week(!!) and some other jaunts made for 23.7 miles.

Got out before the hot heat hit and got 8.2 in this morning. 365 total including today. With a good month, and I am going to have a good month, I can be almost caught up.

One bump in the road: the battery on my Garmin died. The book says "Gramin recommends that you take your device to a trained watch repair professional to have the battery changed." Like hell. What do I look like? I am a trained fix it person of some repute, right?

Well, okay.

I took my 00 Phillips screwdriver (the little bitty one, the itty bitty one is a 000.) and the knifeblade of my Leatherman to the back of that thing and had it off it short order. (That was yesterday) I looked at the innards for a long time and couldn't figure out how to get at the battery. I put the back back on.

Sleeping on it always gives me inspiration. So, today I used the little knife blade to pry at one end of this clasp looking thingie. It flipped up nicely. I slid a fresh battery under the thin sheet of plastic (I sell the battery at the store, it's not some super duper thing.) and then carefully screwed the back back on upside down.

Arrgh.

So I took the four screws out again and reversed the cover and the damn thing works like new.

Have a great week everyone!

Thanks, Noddy.

It was in the nineties (F) with high humidity today.
I felt like I was running through gumbo.

Two races? Yikes. It's been months and months since I even ran one.

Though gumbo, exactly. Decidedly unpleasant.

We did the entire usual workout though and we're definitely at the point where I'm ready to add to it. Trackmom is too (moreso than I am I think), newbie is ambivalent though and we'll go ahead and give her a bit more time. I might start doing more on my own.

Most running these days in New York (hit 100 today) ought be done by moonlight. Just before dawn hear the nightbirds sing.

Hey: Here's a link to Fifty Great Running Moments. NYRR is producing one a day for the next fifty days. Watch one or come back to watch them all.

Fifty Great NYRR moments

So inspiring to see the finish of Alberto Salazar.
You know they will be showing Greta.

When it's this hot, who needs a clock? I like sitting out with the dogs when it's really really early and not broiling yet. Regrettably, my dogs are not morning dogs - so walks have to wait til late at night - after dark again.

Once upon a time, no matter how miserably hot it was, the Beasts that Go Bump emerged after dark to snack on anyone who left the safety of the hearth fire.

A human story.

A few months ago, in the park I run, a young man appeared, he slowly walked a couple of Kms. held by the shoulders by his sisters. Then he made some very simple gymnastic exercises. He was recovering from a heart attack.
Weeks later, we could see him strolling at a very slow pace, one leg limping a little. His exercises were a bit harder.
Today he jogged. As he passed by, several of the daily runners who were doing their stretching applauded. He turned his head and smiled.
Sport does wonders.

It was!

How have you been btw, mac? What are you up to these days?

Went running today, just me and newbie, trackmom couldn't make it today. I'm definitely ready to take it up a notch -- after the usual 2.25 miles (1 mile running, 1.25 miles walking) I was ready for more. Definitely tired, definitely tomato-headed, but nowhere near the exhaustion level I felt at the beginning of this, and I don't want to coast too much.

Sozlet wanted to run with us for the second half and had the grace to be whupped by the end. She was skipping early on and that was irritating. ("Well it might be easy for YOU, little missy, but WE'RE working here...!") But by the end of her second running lap she was knocked out. (She won the speed race though -- on the last 100 yards of the last lap I kept going faster and faster and she stayed right with me and then got ahead of me in the very last bit.)

we are keeping up our twenty year old routine : in the pool by 8 a.m. and out by about 9 a.m. - sure gives us a good appetite for enjoying a full breakfast !

now that it's warm enough for garden work there is an hour or three Shocked a day to cut the lawn and hedges , transplant shrubs and perennials , chase bugs and slugs .. ...
by 2 p.m. we've usually earned a break for lunch and take it easy until about 4 p.m.

i see it's 3:15 and since it's not very hot today - only in the mid 20's (about 70+ F) - i'll go out and transplant some more ornamental grasses , but have to use mosquito spray first !!!

I'm impressed with sozlet's speed (and not at all surprised about the skipping!)

I'm still exercising six days a week - an hour of various cardio six days, weight training 3 days. I started going to a Step class a few weeks ago which is fairly tough for me. I like the challenge of thinking about choreography and not just repeating x counts of physical effort.

Soz--

You seem to enjoy running more than the winter sessions at the gym.

Mac--

I'm impressed. Do you find yourself moving more easily these days?
