Still chugging along.
Got in a short run today.
I am now in Warwick RI on my virtual George's Jog to Georgia.
Plugging along, at 25 reps.
Please say hi to my old college roommate as you pass Warwick.
can't walk today. got the 2nd day pain (the worst kind) from the step aerobic (i think...who really cares from what).
no Spamalot either. no nothing. no mood.
bah.
Am I getting back to normal?.... Another 3.05 miles tonight and I had to fight off LazyBoy Brain who started griping at the 6 train which never showed up and who whined all the way over to the N/R (which also was sooooo sloooow in coming...... )
LazyBoyBrain
"Why can't we just go hoooome?"
JoeNationBrain
"Because we are going to go run tonight because tomorrow night it's going to rain."
LazyBoyBrain
"Maybe it wooooon't."
JoeNationBrain
"I, er, we, er, I am not going to have a discussion about this. We are going to the park, we are going to run up to the reservior and then over to 59th Street so we get three miles."
LazyBoyBrain
"How come you think you are the boss of me??"
JoeNationBrain "Get on the train."
On the Long Run
I am at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. Van Cortland is a famous running space, it is not far from my apartment but I have never set foot in the place.
Heading over to US 95 next on to way to Canada.

Second Day Syndrome -- always brutal.
Rest up. RICE.
I think tendons in my calves shrunk by half, it pulls so much that when i stand up straight i feel as if they were going to snap.... but pain is less.
i walk around in high heels today, it actually feels better, heh.
question: how much ibuprofen is too much?
since i started going back to the gym a lot, i've been taking some on most days - maybe 10 days now. i don't take more than 400 or 600mg a day, but still.... can't do this forever. Are there any natural substitutes that will prevent muscle ache the next day? I heard milk helps for whatever reason to break down the acid that causes the muscle ache, but that sure don't work as well as ibuprofen. anything else?
i expect that in a few weeks when i'm all strengthened up it will be a non-issue, but i don't want to live on ibuprofen for weeks.
I don't know anything I could recommend.
I usually resort to Irish Penicillin.
Good run today.
2 miles easy.
2 miles at tempo.
2 miles easy.

I wouldn't go nuts with the ibuprofen. Doses > 400 mg can damage your liver, see:
http://www.healthoma.com/what-can-ibuprofen-overdose-do-to-you/ (I just Googled
Ibuprofen Overdose; you may find more comprehensive sites by doing something similar).
PS So far, this was my toughest day. I didn't do any more than I have in the last several days but the weight training was a lot more loud grunting than usual. It just seemed harder. I think I'm just getting tired from the end of the week/I've been going nonstop for days, with the exercise and the eating plan. Tomorrow is a half day at work but then I'm off to lunch with a friend. But after that, a nap!
Hi, this is your Uncle Joe(Boy, Have I been hurting)Nation speaking:
First, stop.
Rest ..... ice down those sore spots (Five minutes of icepack, five minutes NO icepack .. no more than forty minutes total
take some Advil before bed. two or three, no more.
On the day the soreness is about GONE, not completely gone, (That might be a week to ten days from now) try some gentle stretching of the area and do some of your routine at VERY LOW intensity.
Go to bed, (Advil optional)
See how you
feel in the morning.
Increase your intensity a little a time AS LONG AS YOU FEEL BETTER in the morning.
take your time..
Joe(no sense making any injury permanent)Nation
Joe, you should have posted before I went to boxing and total body workout classes.
10 DAYS?! that doesn't sit well with my impatience.
on the upside, my calves seem to hurt less, or i'm less aware of them, because everything hurts now.
until monday, i'll only going to do light eliptical (and some weights), and that probably only once. that's 3 days of near total rest. i tend to bounce back quick... we'll see.
um.... nothing says you can't work your upper body. Just rest the calves (poor little cowgirls) until they stop complaining.
Joe(you do not want a tear, that's a tear, not a teardrop.)Nation
I take it the Advil advice was for dag.
I'm better this AM; I really just needed a good night's sleep. I could use more, but definitely better.
Lunch will actually not be too much of a challenge re the eating plan as we're going to a place with a lot of grilling. Probably more of a portion control thing than a type of food thing.
ah, got it, joe. makes sense.
i'm better today, too. the worst of the pain is gone, i can walk now like a person, not a duck. and that's nice.
Jespah: didn't mean to ignore you.
going non-stop for days is not recommended unless there a posse of some sort on your trail.
This will sound odd but it's the best advice I ever got from a trainer. Her name was Valerie Love and she was buff. Okay, she said "The rest period in between the reps is as important as the reps. Listen, feel, the rest. What that's set of muscles you just worked saying?"
AND "The sleep you get is as important as the work you put in. When you lay down at night, tell yourself to let the sleep come deep and strong."
