GENETIC ENGINEERING: GOOD or BAD ?

Reply Tue 25 Dec, 2007 07:41 pm
Let 's take a poll
on genetic engineering, including cloning, for improvement of the species.

I 'm for it.
If I were to have children,
I 'd want them to be as healthy, intelligent, strong, well talented,
as good looking, blonde n blue eyed, and as long lived as possible.

If I cud do it,
I wud do it.

If u cud do it
( and if u wanted kids )
wud u geneticly engineer them for good health,
long life, hi intelligence, good talents, and good looks ?

Explain your reasons ?

Rather than read it as any kind of benign approval, I'm going to take the general non-response to this thread as simple lack of interest in a nutjob idea.

...and keep my fingers crossed that I'm correct.

Genetic engineering and eugenics are two completely different things. I am in favor of genetic engineering to correct defective genes (my husband's brother died of muscular dystrophy, with genetic engineering he could have lived a long and healthy life). I do not think that the government can be trusted to decide which individuals are allowed to breed or the limit the choices people make about reproduction.

If you may legally choose or reject potential mates based on physical appearance in order to enhance the probability of those traits being passed to your offspring, why shouldn't you be able to screen your own sperm/eggs and select those that have the traits of your choice?

I am glad that my kids are not blue-eyed blonds, but respect the right of others to choose inferior traits for theirs.

I know eugenics and genetic engineering are different, but omsickdavid is the one who referenced trying to produce more blonde, blue-eyed (aryan) types - reminiscent of the most infamous instance of eugenics in practice.

And CharlieZ - welcome to A2K - you wouldn't be suprised if you'd read the gems he'd produced in the past.

Haha, OMGDavid starts talking about genetics and then WHAM! whips out blond hair and blue eyes as superior.

You're poisoning the well, david.

I have always felt, and I mean this with all sincerity, that the Finnish people are intellectually and physically superior to the tribes of the lower delta.

Not as much as when Cjhsa makes a statement that I can agree with. When that happens I crouch on the floor of my closet for awhile until the nausea passes.

Cjhsa isn't such a bad guy. He comes across as a crazy, gun-totin' freak, but I really believe that the guy is fairly harmless.

Yeah, he's a "crazy, gun-totin' freak" that just likes to argue for the attention it gets him. A man of many fears and few friends. Kinda of makes me feel sorry for guy.
