Re: Which size softener to buy?

Water is 26 gpg- very hard.
We have 4 people in our home, 3 bathrooms (although the 3rd shower rarely gets used), and our master bathroom has a roman soaking tub.
I have a choice of 32,000- 52,000- or 72,000 grain unit.
I'm leaning towards 52,000.
Will getting the 52,000 mean that it will regenerate less saving me energy or salt? Will the 32,000 work for us? Should we spend the extra $100 on the larger unit?
Thanks.
The people you are buying from should tell you the size you need. If it was me, I wouldn't buy from anyone that didn't but...
The K grains of capacity are adjustable and are dictated by the volume and type of resin in the softener and then the salt dose setting in lbs.
I.E. that 32000... it's a 1 cuft softener. And as soon as you use it, it becomes a 30K because salt can not regenerate the bed back to factory fresh capacity of 32k. You lose 2K grains/cuft. Now to get 30K regenerated capacity, you have to set the salt dose at 15 lbs. Set it at 9 lbs, you get 24K etc..
For salt efficiency, divide 30000 by 15 lbs and you see you are getting 2000 grains/lb of salt. 24000/9= 2666 K per lb etc..
So you need to ask them what volume and type of resin is being used. Then how many lbs of salt will the unit be programmed to use and the resultant K of capacity.
In addition to the K grains of capacity... Softeners and filters are sized by their
continuous service flow rate (SFR), otherwise every time your peak demand water use gpm exceeds the SFR gpm of the volume of resin in the tank, the resin can not remove all the hardness from the water. Your peak demand in a 3 bathroom family of 4 household could be 12-20+ gpm depending on your fixtures, age of the kids and how you live in the house. Big tubs and showers really use high gpm for many minutes at a time.
All that applies to every softener in the world regardless of the brand name of the resin, the tank it is in, the control valve or brand name on the softener.
So without more info about your house etc., no one can tell you what size.
